Logan Koester, a 2019 graduate of Chaminade HS, was drafted by the Philadelphia Phillies in the 32nd round of the 2019 draft. Just two weeks ago, he was leading the Flyers to their 17th NSCHSAA Championship at Hofstra University over St. Anthony’s. Logan is a hard-throwing right-handed pitcher that was named Pitcher of the Year and also hit four HR–which was tied for the conference lead.
Here’s what he had to say…
Can you describe day three of the MLB Draft–how nervous were you what the past couple days have been like?
Day 3 was a nerve wracking day. Before day 3 it seemed almost impossible and it wasn’t really a reality. but after i heard my name get called it felt so surreal and the joy was overwhelming.
2019 has been an outstanding year for you. Are you surprised by how everything has come together for you between winning a championship, winning individual awards and getting drafted?
Honestly, I am not surprised. Me and Aidan Larkin have worked incredibly hard in the off season and it paid off. We knew that this was our last year to try and capture the title that we felt we deserved. The individual awards were great and all but nothing compared to the feeling of leading my team to a league championship. Getting drafted was the one of the greatest excitements of my life and I felt it came with all the hard work i’ve out it over the course of my life.
Who are some individuals that have had the biggest impact on your playing career?
The most important people that have impacted my baseball life are my parents. They have pushed me in the right direction for the past 17 years and i really owe everything to them. Another big impact was Bill Rom, my trainer over at Superior Athletics. He has motivated me mentally and physically to the extremes over the course of the last 18 months and i believe he has been a huge part of my success this season.
Who are your favorite players in Major League Baseball?
My favorite MLB player currently is Kyle Hendricks. I feel as if he has mastered the art of pitching. Although his velocity is not overwhelming, he understands how to use his other pitches and off speed to be successful, and I try to emulate that.
What are your goals moving forward?
One goal I have moving forward in my baseball career is to be on the mound in a Major League stadium. Whether it may be through three years of college or straight from high school, whatever path leads me there, is my ultimate goal.
