Center Moriches has made no secret that their goal was to repeat as New York State Class B Champions this season.
They moved one step closer to that goal with a 3-0 victory over Cold Spring Harbor to capture their second straight Long Island Championship. The Red Devils made quick work of their Suffolk County opponents on the way to a 22-0 record entering the day. They proved that the best of Nassau County was no match for them either.
The Seahawks hung tough, but ultimately they couldn’t muster much offense against Franklin Pierce-commit Andres Auffant. The hard-throwing RHP was dominant, he fired a four-hit shutout, not allowing a runner to reach second base.
Two of the hits came off the bat of Theo Farynick, the opposing pitcher.
Farynick, a Richmond-commit, did a solid job of keeping a high-powered offense in check for much of the game but the Red Devils multi-faceted offense cannot be held down for long.
They used a sacrifice fly by Leyton Pulsipher to score Robert Copozzi in the second inning to take a 1-0 lead. They added a run in the fifth inning on an RBI ground out by Brad Sakellarides.
Copozzi, who had two infield singles in his first two at bats, launched a long solo HR in the sixth inning against Farynick who had appeared to be limping significantly but stayed in the game.
Even with flame-throwing closer David Falco available, Auffant was able to finish what he started, working a spotless seventh inning to improve to 9-0 on the season.
Next up for the Red Devils is a state regional on Saturday back at St. Joseph’s where they will face Marlboro for the right to head back to Binghamton.
