The 11u Whitestone Renegades began play in East Coast Tournaments 11u Memorial Day division by defeating the Long Island Black Diamonds 11-0 in a mercy shortened 4 inning game at Cantiague Park in Hicksville on Saturday morning. It was the first of two games the Renegades will play on Saturday, as they’ll take on the Batting 1000 Seminoles later on this afternoon.
Right handed pitcher Thomas Velaoras got the start on the mound for the Renegades and worked his way to a shortened 4 inning complete game shutout striking out four, only giving up two hits. Velaoras gave up a leadoff single to the first batter of the game, Black Diamonds centerfielder, James Sabella, who then stole second and third. Sabella was doubled off after 2 hitter Chris DiGennaro lined into an unassisted double play to Whitestone third baseman Legend Acosta. Velaoras gave up one more hit before retiring the fourth batter on a ground ball. The Black Diamonds only had one player reach base after the first inning off of Velaoras, Evan Byrnes, who reached on a walk.
The Whitestone offense got started quickly as Legend Acosta singled to left then stole second with one out in the first. Catcher Mikey Conlon doubled Acosta home for the first run of the game. Starting pitcher Thomas Velaoras tripled in one run of his own in the bottom of the second to give the Renegades a 2-0 lead. The Renegades plated four more in the third, highlighted by Conlon’s rbi triple. Conlon finished the day 2-2 with 2 runs batted in. With an 8-0 lead in the bottom of the 4th inning, leadoff hitter Dylan Payano drove a pitch off LI reliever Chris Spatenga to deep left center field, and legged out the 3 run inside the park homerun to put his team over the top and give the Whitestone Renegades the 11-0 victory.
The Long Island Black Diamonds fall to 0-2 in the tournament after falling to the LI Thunder 14-2 earlier in the day.
