It was a battle of the present and future stars on display Tuesday night at St. Joseph’s College. For a while, it appeared the youngster would be the star of the evening but a two-run single by Aidan Larkin broke a scoreless tie and was the difference in Chaminade’s 3-0 victory over St. John the Baptist to send the Flyers into the championship at Hofstra.
St. John the Baptist freshman Kyle Chase took the mound against Chaminade ace Logan Koester. Chase, the unflappable youngster, was perfect through four innings–showing his ability to keep his heart rate and pitch count down.
Koester was matching him zero for zero as well, though.
The Flyers got their first base runner with two outs in the fifth on a walk to Joe McCloskey but Chase worked around it with a strikeout.
The real action occurred in the sixth inning.
After a clean single by Brendan Daly got the Flyers their first hit, there was some tension. It appeared that Daly was picked off of first but the umpire ruled that he got his hand around the tag. A sac bunt attempt could’ve been caught, but wound up resulting in an infield single. Sawyer Duarte dropped down a bunt to first that was misplayed to load the bases with zero outs. A force out at home was the first out of the inning, sending up Hofstra-commit Aidan Larkin. He lined a clean single to center to score two runs and get the Flyers on the board. They added another run on a bases loaded walk by Koester.
In the top of the seventh, Koester retired the first two batters before issuing a two-out walk but inducing a ground out to first to end it.
Both pitchers were outstanding in this game. The freshman was very impressive, showing why he will likely be a Division-I player. He also lined a single in the second inning off Koester. His counter part has been lights-out all season and will now be available to start on either Sunday or Monday in the championship.
