Don’t tell Holy Trinity they are underdogs. In the ultra-competitive CHSAA, the Titans know every team is tough and they also know they can compete with anyone.
“I’ve told this team all year that if you play good baseball, take care of the ball, play together as group–they can beat anyone,” said second-year Head Coach Dan Luisi. “Doesn’t matter who they’re facing, just play tough, stay with your guys and compete, you have a shot to win any baseball game,” he said.
They jumped out to an early 1-0 lead against Teddy Brennan on an RBI single by Stephen Collica to score Nick Hagstrom. They took advantage of a two-out error to score the run.
In the bottom of the second, the Bay Hawks got a leadoff single by Johnny Flannigan and an infield single by Sean Lane who scored on a wild pitch to even the score.
The Bay Hawks took the lead in the bottom of the third on a bases loaded walk to Sean Lane, but they had a golden opportunity to add another run as they had the bases loaded with Parker Chang at the plate. He ripped one down the left field line but it was caught on the run which could’ve broken the game open. Rather, the game was still tight at 2-1.
In the top of the fourth, the Titans tied the game on an RBI groundout by Jonathan Morales and took the lead on a two-out RBI single by Dan Bartels.
The game was not over yet, as the Bay Hawks tied it up in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI single to center field by Mike Florides to score Brandon Bruno.
A leadoff walk always come back to haunt teams. Patrick Connors drew one to start the fifth and hustled around the bases on Jordan Ramlogan‘s triple down the left field line to score the go-ahead run. They extended the lead on a sac fly by Tim Mott.
Mott, the starting pitcher, worked in + out of jams to record the victory. He was relieved by Nick Hagstrom who struck out three in the sixth and worked around a two-out walk to Flannigan in the seventh to seal the deal.
The No. 6 Holy Trinity Titans advance to face No. 1 Chaminade on Monday at St. Joseph’s College. They will look to continue their playoff run, but will have to do so against Logan Koester, the presumptive CHSAA Player of the Year.
