As an athlete, my mom, (and all moms) play a very important role in our lives. I am lucky enough to have a mom that is the real superstar. My mom is my greatest cheerleader, and my #1 fan. There are countless things my mom does for me, to make my life easier and to show me how much she loves me and wants me to be happy and successful.
My mom works a full-time job, yet she always manages to make sure my brother and I have what we need for sports and school. There have been many times that we have been racing to travel practice, where she is taking work calls from the car, or taking vacation days to bring me to an out-of-state tournament. She is always at my games, even if she has to put her own life on hold to be there. She is on the booster club and organizes things like pasta dinners, fundraisers and the year-end banquet. She gives 110% to both my brother and I. Her efforts in everything she does have surrounded me with a determined and hard-working way of life that has truly motivated me to accomplish everything I have done both on and off the field. There is no better role model I could ever imagine than my mom.
However, probably the thing I am most grateful for is the way she can ALWAYS find something positive to say, even on my worst days. She doesn’t critique or criticize how I play, and can always be counted on to say something ridiculous like “you looked really handsome out there” or “that was a good try.” Even on the most off days, she finds a silver lining. This type of support, although it may not sound like it at times, pushes me to keep moving forward and work even harder to succeed
Outside of baseball, she is just an all-around exceptional person. It would be hard to find someone who doesn’t like her. She is always a fan of the underdog, and has a way of just making people feel good in any situation. When I was in elementary school before we left for school every day she would ask my brother and I “What’s the Murtha family rule?” and the answer was “Be kind and nice to everyone!” Now that I’m older I still think about that, and it is something I try to live by.
I may not always say it, but I am so grateful to have a mom I can count on, who is always in my corner– smiling, cheering and loving me like only a mom can. I am truly blessed to call one of my greatest role models in the world my mother as well. Happy Mother’s Day to all the moms out there. Thank you for everything mom, love you.
