On senior day, the Garden City Trojans got the best of the Carey Seahawks by a score of 7-5. With the victory, Garden City improves to a county best record of 13-1 on the season.
Right off the bat, it seemed as if this was going to be a blowout.
In the bottom of the first inning, RBI from Jay Brown, Jake Fraher and a bases loaded walk provided Garden City with an early 3-0 lead.
After nearly batting around in the first inning, this meant that the middle of the Garden City lineup was due up once again in the second. With two runners on base, Andrew Zupicich launched a three-run no doubter to left field, expanding the Garden City lead to 6-0. Zupicich had a monster day at the plate, as he finished 4-4 with 3RBI.
“It was a great environment today, senior day at Garden City High School. We came out to a nice 3-0 lead and I hit the three-run home run to make it 6-0, they came back they were fighting hard but our pitching held it down,” said Zupicich.
Just when it seemed like the game was over, it wasn’t.
In the blink of an eye, Carey strung together several consecutive base hits, narrowing the deficit to 6-2 and setting the table for Matt Cosgrove. With two outs, Cosgrove delivered a bases clearing double, cutting the Garden City lead to one run. Danny McLeod came in relief to record the final out of the inning.
Leading by a run, the Trojans knew they needed some insurance. With Tommy Reilfer on third and two outs, Reifler broke for home while the Carey pitcher was in his windup, causing a balk and giving Garden City the two-run lead they needed. Reifler finished the game going 2-3 with three runs scored.
The cushion proved to be more than enough, as Jake Fraher recorded the final three outs of the game. When it was all said and done, it was Garden City who triumphed to victory on senior day by a score of 7-5.
Heading into Thursday, Garden City has the opportunity to finish the season at 14-1, which would secure them the #1 seed for playoffs. As for Carey, they’ve now dropped three in a row as they fall to 9-5 on the year.
