Game of the Week Presented by Muddy Locker Sports: South Side Blanks Hewlett 5-0 Behind Costaro’s Stellar Performance

On Thursday afternoon, South Side shut out Hewlett by a score of 5-0 to take game three of the series. With the South Side win, the series was evenly split at one win, one loss and one tie a piece.

What seemed to be a beautiful day 30 minutes before game time, turned into a wind tunnel as the sun disappeared minutes before first pitch. However, this didn’t seem to effect any pitcher out of the gate.

Jason Barry got the start for Hewlett. While he kept his team in the ballgame, his offense couldn’t string together hits. He finished going six innings allowing seven hits, two earned runs, one walk and seven strike outs.

On the other hand, Tyler Costaro completely shut down the opposing offense. He threw a complete game shutout, only surrendering three hits and one walk the entire game. He also had two strikeouts.

“I went right in at every batter I trusted my fielder’s on the turf they just kept the ball in front of them, just forced contact and gave them all I could to get this win,” said Costaro.

Through the first three innings, both pitchers were locked in. However, this would change in the 4th inning.

South Side struck first in the top of the 4th on a 2RBI single up the middle from TJ Maher. Fast forward to the 5th, and the Cyclones added another insurance run on a sacrifice fly from Anthony Pericolosi.

With Costaro dealing on the mound holding a three-run lead, all South Side needed to do was make plays in the field. They did just that.

When it was all said and done, South Side walked away with a 5-0 victory and put themselves in a fantastic position to make the playoffs.

“We go into Roslyn next week, we have to get three wins and beat them and hopefully have a shot to take home the conference or something we can do,” said Costaro.

With the victory, South Side improves to 6-5-1 on the season, while Hewlett falls to 7-4-1. Hewlett enters the last week of the regular season with a tough test as they take on the conference leading Bethpage Golden Eagles.
