Syosset Surges In Late Innings, Defeats Farmingdale 4-2

On Monday afternoon, it was Syosset who got the best of Farmingdale, prevailing to a 4-2 victory in extra innings.

Before the game started, it was evident this was going to be a game of inches. The reason for that was because of the stellar pitching match up. Syosset called upon Tufts-commit Cameron Mayer to take the mound, while Farmingdale started ace Justin Rosner.

Farmingdale got to Mayer first in the second inning, as Robbie Manetta delivered an RBI single to put them on the board. Mayer struggled a little in the early innings, but settled in as the game went on.

In the bottom of the 3rd, Kevin Wilson gave Farmingdale a 2-0 lead on an RBI single to RF. With the way Rosner was pitching, it seemed as if this would be enough run support to win the game. However, it wasn’t.

Through the first five innings, Rosner was dominant as he had seven strikeouts, allowing just one hit. All he had to do was record six more outs, but the defense behind him prevented that from happening.

With Syosset needing two runs to record the comeback, the strategy was simple; just put the ball in play. That’s exactly what they did.

To begin the top of the 6th, Syosset got the lead off man on from an E6. Two bunt singles later, and suddenly it was a 2-1 ballgame with runners on first and third with nobody out. This is where it got really interesting.

On a stolen base attempt to second base, the ball trickled away from the second baseman on the throw down and went into the outfield. This allowed the tying run to score and the go ahead run to advance 90 feet away with nobody out. Rosner being Rosner, got the next three batters to strikeout. He finished the game going 6.2 innings, allowing four hits, two walks, no earned runs and struck out ten.

Farmingdale would threaten in the bottom half of the 6th and 7th, but they couldn’t execute and were headed to extras.

With Rosner out of the game, Syosset knew this was their chance to execute. To lead off the inning, PJ Daniels got drilled in the head, but got on base to start things off. Another hit by pitch and a passed ball but two runners in scoring position with two outs. Enter Jacob Lee.

As a Freshman, Lee came through for Syosset when it mattered most, as he delivered a go ahead 2RBI single to the opposite field. Suddenly, it was a 4-2 Syosset lead.

“I saw the pitch deep and drove it the other way,” said Lee.

On the mound, Lee was also the shining star. After getting Farmingdale out without a big threat in the bottom of the 7th, things came a little more difficult for Lee in the bottom of the 8th.

With the bases loaded and two outs, Farmingdale trailed by one run and needed just a base hit to walk it off. With the game on the line, Lee got the batter to line out to left field, securing the tight 4-3 victory for Syosset.

“On the mound I executed with the bases loaded, I tried to attack the strike zone and I got the line out to the left fielder. Big win today and I’m pumped for the rest of the season,” said Lee.

This victory was tremendous for Syosset, as they move to 6-4 on the season and now have a fantastic chance of finishing second or third in the division. As for Farmingdale, they move to 4-6 on the season. Consider these next two games “must win” territory for them.
