After a washout on Friday, everyone was back in action on Saturday. Although the unseasonably cold weather made things interesting, it was a day filled with great baseball regardless.
Here’s how it went down:
Division-I:
Stony Brook split a doubleheader against UMBC Saturday, winning game one 11-3, and losing game two, 6-8. Greg Marino had a strong performance on the mound in their victory, earning his fourth win on the season by pitching 7 innings and only allowing three runs. The bats poured it on as well, Michael Wilson and Brandon Alamo each had three hits. Johnny Decker drove in four runs out of the sixth-spot in the lineup.
Game two was especially disappointing as they took a 5-0 lead in the top half of the first, before ultimately surrendering the lead in the 6th. They will finish up their three-game set with UMBC this afternoon at noon in Maryland.
St. Johns lost a tough one, 2-1. Starter, Ian Murphy, only allowed one hit in four innings and St Johns would only allow two altogether which were unfortunately enough as the bats couldn’t break through against Georgetown. They outhit Georgetown, 7-2, but left 10 men on base and struck out 16 times. They fall to 5-6 in Big East play, they will look to avoid the series sweep today at 1pm.
Fordham split their doubleheader against Massachusetts Lowell, winning game one, 9-2 and losing game two, 2-8. Game one saw Fordham score early and often as they churned out 16 hits and nine runs. The pitching was a collective effort as Matt Mikulski, John Stankiewicz, and Brian Weissert all pitched three innings. Nick Labella, Alvin Melendez and Jake Baker all notched three hits, with Baker leading the way with four RBI.
Game two didn’t see a similar result for either the pitching or the bats. Massachusetts would break the game open in the 4th, when they extended their lead 8-1.
Hofstra lost their second straight to start the series against James Madison, losing 4-3. There was no scoring on either side until the 5th when Hofstra took the lead on a throwing error by the third baseman. They led 2-1 into the sixth inning when Anthony D’Onofrio drew a bases loaded walk. Hofstra would be down going into the 9th when, Ryan Morash doubled to tie the game. Unfortunately, it wouldn’t stay tied for long as James Madison would walk it off in the bottom half of the inning on a hit by pitch. They drop to 5-9 in conference play and 12-26 overall. They will look to avoid the sweep today at 1pm.
Division-II:
Adelphi’s amazing run continued as they swept their doubleheader against New Haven, which brought their current run to 25 wins in 26 games including 17 straight. Game one saw Adelphi win 8-5, after briefly trailing 1-0 in the second. As they have been accustomed to, the bats came up huge. The big blow came on a three-run shot by Brandon Warick to break a 2-2 tie in the fourth to score Lucas Terwilliger and Mike Cattani. Thomas Colombo provided the insurance with a two-run double later that inning. Kevin Glasser threw 1.2 shutout innings in relief of Danny Taggart (4.1 IP, 3 ER). Glasser, a freshman transfer from Cortland, has been a huge addition to the bullpen. Tom Ambrosino recorded his 12th save of the season, one shy of Dillon McNamara‘s program-record set in 2013.
Game two saw the bats maintain their pace as they propelled Adelphi to a 11-5 victory, they jumped out to an early 6-0 lead and with the way they’ve been playing, there was never a doubt about this one. Lawrence Cicileo stayed red-hot with a two-run triple in the first to get them on the board, Mike Cattani joined the party with an RBI single to score him to make it 3-0. In the second, Brett Malm cleared the bases with a three-run double to make it 6-0 and Tim O’Connor made it 7-0. Josh Rovner had it under control. The Pat-Med grad improved to 4-0 on the season, firing five strong innings allowing two ER on six hits and three walks. Mark Novello, Nick Maricich and Seth Sypniak combined to finish the final four innings. Overall, they notched 14 hits with Jonathan Iadevaia led the way with a 4-for-4 performance, while Jack Ryan led the way with three RBI. The Panthers will look to continue their dream season with another victory today against New Haven on Monday at 3:30pm.
LIU Post and NYIT split their double header, which you can read about here.
Molloy’s doubleheader saw plenty of offense and two wins for the Lions as they won with scores of 18-9 and 11-6 against Bridgeport. Matt Overton was a monster in game one, going three for six with a homerun and six RBI. Jake Saltzman drew in four runs and Sean Hogan added two. Tim Panetta earned the victory, he went five innings, allowing six ER on 11 hits and a walk with five punchouts. Anthony Pedraita recorded his second save of the season, firing four innings, allowing two ER.
Game two saw a bit different game trajectory as the score was 5-5 in the sixth when the Lions’ bats went to work and scored six runs. Ryan Hensley had the big blow–a two-run triple, which was followed by RBI hits by James Messina, Sean Hogan, Tom Brady and Nick Marino. Joe Minucci (5 IP, 1 ER) got the start but did not factor in the decision, the win was awarded to Chris Wiercinski who fired the sixth inning. With the victory, the Lions improve to 10-12 in conference play and will look to sweep the series today with a double header against Bridgeport in Connecticut.
Queens College had a tough day Saturday, losing both games of their doubleheader 11-8, and 7-2 against St. Thomas Aquinas. In Game one Queens got down early and often, but to their credit they wouldn’t quit, as they kept interesting into the 9th scoring three in the eighth and one in the ninth on a Jon Strauss RBI hit. Dennis Buckstein was tagged with his second loss of the season.
Game two was a similar story to game one, as they trailed 4-0 after one but didn’t let the game get out of control. They battled back to make it 4-2 in the fifth inning but that was as close as they’d get. STAC opened it up in the fifth on an Anthony Maisono triple. Dylan Hughes was tagged with the loss. These two teams will be back in action today in a double header in Queens.
Division-III:
Farmingdale was celebrating their Senior Day and decided to celebrate by winning both games of their doubleheader against Mount Saint Vincent, 10-0 and 6-2. Steven Burke improved to 5-0 after he threw 7.1 innings of shutout ball in game one. Matthew Constantine fired the final 0.2 innings to finish the shutout. Mike Amandola, Ryan DePalma, Jason Conti and Brandon O’Neill all had two RBI.
Game two was more of a collective pitching effort as seven Rams combined to only allow two runs which would be more than enough for the win. They actually trailed 2-0 in this one, but the offense broke out with four runs in the fifth inning with the big knock coming on a double by Vin Napolitano. Mike Amandola added a two run single. With the victory, the Rams are now 29-7. They have brushed off the ugly 21-0 shutout loss with three consecutive wins. They will wait to see who they face in the Skyline Conference playoffs on Friday.
Old Westbury won both games in their doubleheader against Mount Saint Mary’s 10-9 and 5-1 respectively. Shaun Kaminski was the hero game one, where he went 4-for-5 with four RBI including the game winning home run in the eighth inning. Joe Sarni earned the win with 4.1 terrific innings in relief of Patrick Quinn.
Game two saw Christian Tessitore throw a gem for his fourth win of the season and Kaminski rack up another four hits, which was half the team’s total.
Maritime split their doubleheader against Purchase, losing game one 6-3 and winning game two 5-1. In the victory, Travis Bruinsma recorded his fourth win of the season with a scoreless inning of relief. Matt Eng led the way with four hits and 3 RBI. They will enter the postseason with an overall record of 21-16, including 11-7 in conference play.
USMMA won both halves of their doubleheader against St Joseph’s (Brooklyn) with scores of 8-3 and 4-1 respectively. Joe Raab struck out 10 in game one and only allowed one run in six innings to improve to 5-1 on the season. Game two saw another great pitching performance from Andrew Spinnenweber, as he improved to 5-0 on the year after five innings of one run ball.
Ju-Co:
Suffolk swept Bronx CC, by the scores of 14-0 and 11-0 (both in 5 innings). In the first game, Joe Valentino continued his incredible season as he fired four innings with eight strikeouts. Chris Amato hit a three-run home run and scored 3 runs. In the second game, Ciaran McGinnis recorded the victory,
