The Shashaty teams had a field day this afternoon in an 8-2 victory over Copiague.
Colin and his brother, Ryan, each went 2-for-3 with Colin providing the game-tying two-run double in the bottom of the third, and Ryan scoring three runs and stealing a base for the Tigers.
“I told Liam Fodor, ‘settle down, keep doing what you’re doing and we’ll get some runs for you,” said Colin. That’s precisely what his team did. They were able to overcame an early 2-0 deficit in which it looked like it could be a short day for sophomore RHP Liam Fodor, but the game took a turn after the first inning.
Copiague opened the first inning with a single by Shane Abney, although he was thrown out attempting to steal second by catcher Michael Catrone. The following batter, Justin Marte, laced a single to center. After an infield pop out, Sean Abney drew a walk before consecutive RBI singles by David Espinal and Christian Ramirez gave the Eagles an early 2-0 lead. Fodor was able to put out the fire with a strikeout of Esteban Sime.
Shane Abney got the start for the Eagles and he allowed two hits in the opening frame but benefited from a terrific tag by Sime at home plate to tag out Ryan Shashaty to end the first inning. The ball went to the backstop but ricocheted back to Sime who made an athletic diving play to end the inning.
In the bottom of the third, Will Albanese led off with a walk, and advanced on an error by the third baseman. A hit by pitch of Rocco Stola loaded the bases for Colin who hit a double down the left field line to tie up the game at 2-2.
In the next inning, Larry Citrola led things off with a double to left field and scored on a single by Stola, and a wild pitch made it 4-2.
Fodor was dominant after the first inning, and that was all the runs he would need but the Tigers continued to tack on runs in the fifth inning, with the big knock coming on a pinch-hit two-run double by Andrew Infranco to score Stola and Citrola, who both walked.
Citrola came on in relief in the sixth inning and fired two scoreless innings to seal the deal for the Tigers who completed the three-game sweep one week after getting swept by Smithtown West.
Northport improves to 5-4 in league play and they have three big series coming with Newfield, Smithtown East and Hills East as they have the postseason in mind.
