Friday’s College Baseball Recap (4/19) Presented by The Schwarz Institute

Let’s dive into the action that took place on Good Friday…

Division-I:

Stony Brook split a doubleheader with Albany, Winning game one 8-3 but dropping a tough one in game two, 4-3. Game one saw Chris Hamilton and Brandon Allamo each get three hits and drive in three runs. Albany third baseman Brad Malm (Pat-Med 2017) hit a three-run homerun in the 1st of game two which kept Stony Brook just out of reach and playing catchup the entire game.

Fordham dropped another one to St.  Louis, as their offense just couldn’t muster up enough runs today. St. Louis scored the first runs of the game for either side in the 6th and would break the game open in the 8th. Fordham starter John Stankiewicz wasn’t bad, as he went 7 innings of two run ball. Unfortunately for him, St. Louis starter Cody Luther was dominant going 8 innings of one-run ball, while striking out 11 Rams.

St. Johns has finally found a new basketball coach and the baseball team decided to celebrate by crushing Villanova 24-6. Mike Antico was the star of the game as he mashed three homeruns on the night and drove in seven runners. The rest of the lineup wasn’t too shabby either, as there were multi-hit games by Carson Bartels, Brandon Miller, Ryan Markey, Ryan Hogan, and Brandon Bossard. Joe Kelly came on in relief and got the win for his five innings of shutout ball.

Hofstra continued their better play of late, winning their third straight game 7-3. Ryan Morash got the scoring going with a homer in the 2nd inning. Anthony D’Onofrio had a nice day at the plate as well, going 2-2 and driving in two runs. The staff has some issues with walks, totaling 10 free passes for UNCW on the night, they were able to manage the damage done all night to give the Hofstra the win.

Division-II:

Queens College split a doubleheader against Bridgeport Friday, winning game one 4-2, but dropping game two 4-7. The story of game one was starter, Dennis Buckstein dominating on the mound, throwing a complete game while only allowing two runs. He improved to 5-1 on the season. Game two was a back and forth affair until the 5th inning when Bridgeport took the lead and didn’t look back. The split saw Queens go to 21-14-1 on the year.

LIU Post dropped Molloy 7-2 on Thursday. It was a low-scoring game that actually saw Molloy ahead going in to the 8th inning. Molloy starter Timothy Panetta was pitching well but just couldn’t finish the inning, Zach Fritz of Post, hit a three-run homerun to give Post a lead that they would not give back. Post ace James Varela improved to 7-2 on the season as he pitched a strong 8 innings.

NYIT took both halves of a double-header on Thursday, against Lincoln, where they outscored them 31-6 on the day. Chris Mott won game one, going 7 innings while only allowing one run and striking out 15. DJ Masuck won game two and improved to 8-0 on the year when he went 7 innings while allowing three runs and striking out 11. Jake Lebel hit a homerun in each part of the doubleheader giving his first and second of the season.

Division-III:

Farmingdale stayed on their amazing run, winning their 18th and 19th games out of their last 20, when they beat Maritime 6-1 and 5-0. They locked up the No. 1 seed in the Skyline Conference tournament which begins on May 1. Vincent Rice and Matthew Constantine were common factors in both games. Rice homered in each game giving him four on the season. Constantine closed out game one, earning the save for his 3.1 innings of shutout work. He then started game two and again held Maritime scoreless for the first 3.2. The win in game two would go to Anthony Visconte, who improved to 4-2 on the season, and also held Maritime scoreless for three innings.

Old Westbury beat the College of New Rochelle 4-1. Starter Patrick Quinn was dominant, throwing a complete game and only allowing one unearned run while striking out 9. A few timely hits from Mike Manetta and John Condon provided Old Westbury with more than enough support as Quinn had New Rochelle fooled all day.

  1. Big Day for the Malm boys:
“Brett Malm led Adelphi in both games, batting 5-for-7 overall, and a perfect 2-for-2 in game two, both hits coming in the big sixth. The senior led off the frame with a solo home run to left, and cleared the bases with a three-run double as Adelphi batted around in the frame to help seal the comeback effort.”
