Manhasset Cruises To A 6-2 Victory Over Carey

Despite the 30 MPH winds, Manhasset brought their “A game” to the ballpark on Monday afternoon as they triumphed to a 6-2 victory over Carey. This marks their first victory of the young season.

After being swept by powerhouse Garden City last week, Manhasset wasted no time getting the run support they needed in this one.

In the bottom of the first inning, Patrick Jarvis lined a single up the middle to give Manhasset an early 1-0 lead. Jarvis finished the day going 2-for-4 at the plate with two RBI.

Jay Schlaefer got the start for Manhasset and did a fantastic job of shutting down the Carey lineup. He went the distance, allowing two earned runs, no walks and struck out nine batters.

“I was throwing a lot of off speed pitches, I was trying to keep them thinking the entire game and I thought that worked pretty well,” said Schlaefer.

After their run in the first inning, the score would remain the same until the bottom of the 5th. Conor Huckemeyer held the Manhasset lineup in check for the first four innings, but this changed when they went to the bullpen.

The aggressive base running from head coach Mark Giardino paid off as Manhasset cashed in on a one-out suicide squeeze from Colin Hanlon. Jay Schlaefer added to their lead with an RBI of his own and suddenly it was 3-0 in favor of Manhasset. This was all the run support Schlaefer needed.

The Indians tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the 6th, providing them with a six-run lead. When it was all said and done, Manhasset earned their first conference victory of the year by a final score of 6-2.

Freshman Mikey Brunetti went 3-for-3 at the plate, while Cole Zaffiro went 2-for-4.

“It was awesome that we were able to score so many runs today and I think that this win is huge for us, I think it’s a huge momentum builder, I think we’re a scary team, I think we have a great staff and I think we’re coming for the playoffs,” said Schlaefer.

With the win, Manhasset improves to 1-3 on the season, while Carey suffers their first loss of 2019, falling to 3-1. They play game two of the series tomorrow.
