What a day for baseball it was yesterday. It was the first day where the conditions were no concern at all. At 66, sunny and no wind you could say it was a perfect day. Additionally, teams in our coverage area went 20-6 which makes it that much better. Here’s how it went down.
Division-I:
Fordham completed the double header sweep over St. Joseph’s on Saturday to improve to a record of 19-12 on the season. In game one, they blanked St. Joseph’s 2-0. Evidently, this game was a pitchers duel. Matt Mikulski got the start for Fordham and was phenomenal, going eight innings allowing four hits, no earned runs, four walks and seven strike outs. Kyle Martin picked up his sixth save of the year in relief. In game two of the double header, Fordham showed some life in the late innings as they defeated St. Joseph;s 4-3. Trailing 2-0 heading into the fifth, Fordham scratched across runs in two consecutive frames to take the lead and win the game. At the plate, Nick Labella went 3-4 with an RBI. John Stankiewicz earned his fifth win of the year and Kyle Martin picked up his sixth save. TAhey play St. Joseph’s again today at noon for game three of the series.
Hofstra dropped game two of the series to Northeastern, falling 5-1. From the beginning of this one, Northeastern jumped out to a quick lead and never looked back. Hofstra was hled to six hits and one run offensively. With the loss, Hofstra now falls to 5-20 on the year. They play Northeastern in a rubber match today at 1 PM.
In an offensive battle, St. John’s dropped game two of the series against Butler by a score of 11-7. Although their offense was on display, their pitching couldn’t settle down when needed the most. After holding Butler to one run on Friday, this was a different story. Defensively, St. John’s surrendered three errors. Clearly this is something they would like to forget. Their next game is against Albany on Tuesday.
Stony Brook split with America East rival Hartford to push their record to 16-9 overall. They lost game one, 9-5, and won the second game, 7-5. Brian Herrmann recorded his fourth win of the season, going six innings before giving way to Sam Turcotte who fired the seventh inning for the save. The offense made the most of their nine hits. Michael Wilson drove in two runs, Nick Grande scored three runs, had two hits and drove in a run. They will finish out their series today at noon.
Division-II:
NYIT swept Bridgeport to improve their record to 19-5 on the season and run their winning streak to seven. They won game one, 6-2, behind Chris Mott. He struck out 10 over seven innings for his second win of the season. Ryan Mueller went 1.2 for the save. The Bears only had four hits, but they made the most of it. Ryan Kuskowski drove in two runs. In the second game, Joseph Murphy fired the 7 inning shutout for his fifth win of the season. The big blow came on Jake Lebel’s three-run shot in the fifth to break the game wide open. The Bears are on fire, they will play a double header with Bridgeport today as they look to become the first 20-win team in our coverage area.
LIU Post ran their win streak to 10 with a DH sweep over Mercy, they are now 19-9 on the season. Stop me if you’ve heard this before but James Varela threw a gem in game one. He is now 5-2 on the season. He went 8.2 IP striking out eight and Mike Lazos recorded the last out. Dave Brehm, Anthony Vaglica and Giovanni Ciaccio each had three RBI. In the second game, Noah Lorenzo went the distance for his fifth win of the season. The final was 7-2, with the knockout punch coming on Zach Fritz‘ fifth inning home run to give the Pioneers the lead. They are red-hot as well, looking to sweep Mercy today to win their 20th and 21st games.
Adelphi ran roughshod over Saint Anselm by the scores of 13-1 and 9-0 to improve to 18-5. Ed Baram improve to 5-0 in the first game, he went eight innings, allowing no ER and striking out five. The offense backed him with 15 hits including Kyle Olson‘s first home run. In the second game, Nic Luc fired a shutout for his second win of the season. Lucas Terwilliger led the way with three hits, two RBI and two runs scored. Brett Malm and Kyle Olson added two RBI apiece. They will look to stay hot today against Saint Michael in a DH.
Molloy split with St. Thomas Aquinas to push their record to 8-17 but 5-5 in conference play. In the victory, they put up 11 runs in the second inning which effectively ended the game. They had 16 hits and drew four walks, the standout performers were Michael Nacinovich who went 4-for-4 with 3 RBI and two runs scored and Nick Marino who had two hits, drove in three runs and scored twice. Joe Minucci did not hang around long enough for the win, but Anthony Pedraita went 4.1 shutout innings for the win. They will close out their series with a DH today against STAC.
Division-III:
Farmingdale swept Mount Saint Mary Saturday in a double header, improving to an extremely impressive 18-5 on the year. Their pitching was stellar in both games. In game one, they won 6-1. Steven Burke was the man in charge of game one, going 7.1 innings on the mound allowing four hits and one earned run. He also went 2-4 at the plate with an RBI. Vincent Rise went 2-4 at the plate as well. The Rams kept things going in game two as they shut out Mount Saint Mary 2-0. Although they only had three hits, Farmingdale executed well with runners in scoring position. Nicholas Rooney got the start for Farmingdale and was lights out. He went this distance, allowing just three hits. Farmingdale plays St. Joseph’s (Brooklyn) in a double header today with a chance to stay hot.
Old Westbury picked up a very impressive DH sweep over Maritime on Saturday to put themselves above the .500 mark on the year. In game one, They dominated Maritime, 10-1. Offensively, they collected 13 hits. Brandon Wilson was a menace at the plate, going 3-4 with 4 RBI including a 3-R HR. John Condon also went 3-4 with an RBI of his own. Patrick Quinn picked up his second win of the year. In game two, the Old Westbury pitching staff stayed dominant as they picked up a 3-0 victory. Christian Tessitore went the distance for Old Westbury, allowing six hits and three walks over seven innings of work. At the plate, Nic Labiento went 1-2 with 2 RBI. With the victory, Old Westbury now sits at 11-10-1. They play Purchase in a double header today.
Merchant Marine swept Purchase, 8-5 and 1-0, to improve to 17-7 on the season. Andrew Hunt recorded the win in game one, which went 13 innings. He fired five shutout innings in relief of John Kelly Jr, the go-ahead run scored on an RBI single by Jesse Reinebold. In Game 2, Andrew Spinnenweber spun a gem, going the distance and allowing just four hits and a walk. The only run came in the third inning on a sac fly by Reinebold. They face Mount St. Vincent today.
