With the poor weather on Friday, most teams were able to schedule double headers on Saturday or Sunday to make up the rain out. Only a few teams were in action. The competition is beginning to heat up. On Friday, we saw only three Long Island teams play, serving a perfect 4-0 record on the day. With conference tournaments just a little over a month away, every game counts. Here’s how things shaped out Friday.
Division-I:
Hofstra picked up an impressive 7-1 victory at the hands of Northeastern on Friday. This marks their fifth win of the year, but it was one they desperately needed. Hofstra got off to a scorching hot start, as they scored three in the opening frame. They never looked back from here. Quinn Parker went 2-5 with 3 RBI at the plate, and Vito Friscia had 2 RBI. Two-way player Jimmy Joyce picked up his first collegiate victory on the mound, going 6.2 innings allowing five hits, no earned runs and striking out six. Hofstra looks to make it two consecutive victories against Northeastern today at 1 PM.
St. John’s defeated Butler in Big East play Friday afternoon, triumphing to a 4-1 victory. Joe Lasora got the start for St. John’s and was absolutely spectacular. He went seven innings allowing just one hit, no earned runs, two walks and seven punch outs. Joe Kelly picked up the two inning save in relief. Lead-off hitter Mike Antico led the charge at the plate, going 2-4 with a walk. Ryan Markey also contributed, going 1-3 with 3 RBI and a walk. St. John’s plays Butler again today at 2 PM.
Division-III:
St. Joseph’s completed the convincing two-game sweep over Yeshiva on Friday afternoon. In game one, they won 5-1. Tim Woodford got the start for the Golden Eagles and completely shut down the Yeshiva lineup. He went the distance, allowing just three hits, one earned run, three walks and a stellar 16 strike outs. He improved his record to 3-1 on the year with this win. At the plate, Gehrig Montoro, Tyler Sanderson and Charles Rainone all chipped in with RBI.
The Golden Eagles continued their dominance over Yeshiva as they crushed them in game two by a score of 17-1. A manager can only dream of a starting pitcher going the distance in back-to-back games of a double header, but the St. Joseph’s pitchers did just that. Kevin Czeczotka picked up his first victory of the year and was stellar. He had a complete game as well, allowing five hits, two walks and nine punch outs. At the plate, St. Joseph’s recorded 14 hits and were able to take advantage of the eight errors Yeshiva recorded. All together, they suffered 13 errors in the double header. Jesse Nakashian led the offense, going 4-5 at the plate. Montoro went 3-6 with an RBI and Angelo Montalbano went 1-2 with an RBI. Sitting at 12-11 on the season, the Golden Eagles look forward to a crucial double header against Maritime on Sunday.
