Saturday’s College Baseball Recap (3/30) Presented by The Schwarz Institute

Division-I:

Stony Brook walked out of Saturday as winners in both games against Maine in their double header. With the wins, they now improve to 13-8 on the year. In game one, the Seawolves triumphed to an 8-3 victory. At the plate, four different players recorded multi-hit games. Michael Wilson went 3-3 with 2 RBI. He’s now batting a ridiculous .466 on the season. Greg Marino was the winning pitcher in this one, as he went seven innings allowing four hits and two earned runs. Game two provided much of the similar magic from game one as they beat Maine 5-3. Although they didn’t have another offensive explosion, it was a gritty victory. Nick Grande was the star at the plate for the Seawolves, as he went 3-3 with 2 RBI. Brian Herrmann went the distance, allowing three earned runs on six hits. They face Maine again today.

Fordham came out on the wrong side of a tightly contested ballgame, as they lost 5-3. After leading the majority of the game, the Fordham pitching staff faulted at the wrong time. A four-spot in the bottom of the 6th would be all Rhode Island needed to put the Rams away. Although Fordham had 11 hits offensively, they couldn’t come out on top. They play Rhode Island again today.

Hofstra suffered two tough defeats on Saturday at the hands of Charleston. In game one, they lost 7-4 in extra innings. Despite leading 4-0 heading into the 6th inning, the Hofstra bullpen couldn’t stay in tact, opening the door for a Charleston come back. Runs in three consecutive frames tied the game at four a piece, and Charleston scored three in the bottom of the 10th to win it. In many ways, Hofstra blew this game. At the plate, Vito Friscia went 3-3 with an RBI. The momentum from game one seemed to linger into game two as Hofstra was blown out 16-0. Now standing at 3-18 on the season, Hofstra will face Manhattan on Tuesday.

Division-II

LIU Post continued to display their scorching hot bats as they defeated STAC both games in Saturday’s double header. In game one, the Pioneers won 11-6. In total, they had 13 hits. Mike Manzione, Jimmy Mendyk and Zach Fritz combined for nine RBI. Noah Lorenzo picked up his fourth win of the year, while Mike Lazos earned his second save. The Post offense was deemed unstoppable again in game two as they defeated STAC 9-4. At the rate their offense is playing at right now, nobody in the ECC can keep up with them. The stars of the offense in game two were Chris Wasson who went 3-4 and David Brehm who was 2-4 with three RBI. They will look for the four-game sweep against STAC today at 1 PM.

Adelphi split their double header with American International College on Saturday. In game one, they came out victorious by a score of 5-1. The story of this one was the huge eight inning rally that propelled them towards a win. After trailing 1-0 heading into the 8th, their bats did what they do best and strung together hits at the right time. Their pitching also did a fantastic job of keeping the AIC lineup in check. Ed Baram was the winning pitcher, as he went 7.2 innings allowing three earned runs and four hits. In game two, Adelphi came out flat as they were defeated 9-2. From the start in this one, the pitching got roughed up. The offense didn’t provide a spark either, as they were held to just five hits. They have a rubber match today at noon.

Molloy was impressive on Saturday, as they swept Lincoln in their double header. In game one, the Lions exploded for a 15-2 victory. Not only did they combine for 16 hits, but 10 different players recorded a hit. Jake McCarthy and Nick Marino both had three hits and three RBI each. In game two, the Molloy pitching staff was stellar as they grinded out a 2-0 victory. It’s never easy to win a ballgame when you’re held to two hits, but Molloy made it happen. Joe Minucci earned his first victory of the season, as he pitched six innings allowing four hits, two walks and struck eight batters out. Lucas Burton picked up the save. They play Lincoln again today.

NYIT swept Queens in a DH which you can read about here.

Division-III:

Old Westbury  swept St. Joseph’s in a DH by the scores of 13-1 and 4-1. In Game 1, Patrick Quinn was lights out, firing a two-hit shutout. They have been looking for the hard-throwing freshman to have his coming out party and that was the performance he gave. He struck out seven and needed only 81 pitches. John Condon led the offense with four hits, three RBI and he scored three runs. Shaun Kaminski and Michael Borsch both had three hits. Mike Manetta added two hits. In the second game, Chris Tessitore went the distance, allowing just five hits, he struck out four and walked nobody. Offensively, it was the Peter Capel show. They got on the board in the first inning on a sac fly by Capel, and SJC tied it up on an RBI single by Jesse Nakashian. In the fifth, Capel scored Condon with an RBI double and it was him again in the seventh with an RBI single to score Brandon Wilson. With the sweep, Old Westbury improves to 7-9-1 on the season while the reigning champs drop to 8-9 and will have to face the red-hot Farmingdale Rams on Monday at 4pm and 7pm for a double header.

USMMA swept Mount St. Mary’s in a DH by the scores of 3-1 and 8-1. In Game 1, Joe Raab was lights-out, going eight innings with 10 strikeouts allowing just one ER on five hits and zero walks. He improves to 3-0 on the season. Kyle Cunningham saved his fifth game of the season. They trailed 1-0 in the seventh inning but Garrett Aichele ripped an RBI triple to tie the game and Jesse Reinebold‘s sac fly was the difference. In the second game, Andrew Spinnenweber did what he does and that’s throw a gem. He struck out 13 over a seven inning complete game, he allowed one run on six hits with one walk. Kyle Cunningham had two hits, two RBI and scored two runs. Vincenzo Altieri and Kyle Cunningham both had two hits and an RBI. They will face Yeshiva today.

Maritime stayed red-hot with a double header sweep over St. Joseph’s-Brooklyn to run their winning streak to eight games. They won 5-4 and 10-0. Ryan Ragone, twice the recipient of the Skyline Rookie of the Week, pitched well once again going six innings and allowing two runs but did not factor in the decision. Alex Poliwoda went 2.1 innings in relief to notch the win and Skylar Graff recorded his first save of the year. Matt Eng had three hits and scored two runs, Shane Sullivan had three hits and his third was the difference in the game. In the second game, Niko Concha went the distance, firing a one-hit shutout with nine strikeouts. Phil Russo led the charge with four hits and an RBI. Ryan Rockhill added three hits and two RBI.
