Freeport Tops Bellmore JFK 5-3 In Non-League Action

In a tightly contested non-league match up Freeport topped Bellmore JFK, 5-3.

On the mound, both starting pitchers were phenomenal. Bellmore JFK sent junior Ryan Schechner to the mound for their first game of the season. Schechner pitched three innings, allowing no earned runs. The starting pitcher for Freeport, Ronny Vicente worked out of a few jams to keep his team in the game. He went four innings, allowing just one earned run.

Matt Nachamie got things started for Bellmore JFK, giving them a 1-0 lead in the 3rd inning on a sacrifice fly. This would be the only offense the Cougars produced for a few innings.

With runners on 1st and 3rd and two outs in the bottom of the 4th, Freeport’s aggression on the base paths showed as a stolen base attempt lead to an E2 on the throw down to 2nd, which scored a run and tied the game. Two pitches later, Ronny Vicente ripped an RBI double to left field, giving Freeport a 2-1 lead.

Things would stay quiet for a little, until the 6th inning rolled around.

Bellmore JFK started the inning off with bases loaded and nobody out. An E5 on an overthrow to the first baseman gave the Cougars a 3-2 lead, putting two runners in scoring position with nobody out. Although they took the lead, they left the bases loaded and weren’t able to tack on any more runs.

Then came the Freeport rally. Following Bellmore JFK’s rally in the top half of the inning, the Red Devils knew they had to answer, and they did. With one out, Viandy Abreu delivered a one-out bases clearing double to put Freeport in front 5-3.

“Yeah I hit the ball to right field and brought all three runs in but this win means a lot to us,” said Abreu after his game winning hit. “It’s a strong team that we have this year and we have a lot of potential we just have to use it,” he added.

Bellmore JFK threatened with runners at the corners and one out in the top of the 7th, but Freeport closed it out and secured their first win of 2019. Both teams portrayed signs of potential and it will be interesting to see what they bring to the table this season.
