Over the past week, several members of the Adelphi Panthers have been relegated to the bench due to flu-like symptoms. Being in close quarters, one player can cause a number of others to get sick and that was a major reason for their recent defeats on their annual trip to Florida.
Fortunately, getting back to New York was exactly the spark the offense needed to get back on track as they used the long ball to power past local rival, Molloy College, by the score of 10-5.
Lawrence Cicileo continued his red-hot start to the season with a two-run first inning HR to score Brett Malm and give the Panthers a 2-0 lead. Sophomore starter Nic Luc took the mound with the lead, he allowed a first inning run on an RBI ground out by Thomas Brady.
The Panthers extended their lead to 3-1 in the third inning on a sac fly by Cicileo. They opened the game up in the fourth inning on a two-run double by Brandon Morse and another huge hit by Cicileo–a two-run RBI single to left which opened up a 7-1 lead.
Freshman Tim Feliz contributed a two-run single in the fifth inning which extended the lead to 9-2 and Thomas Colombo smoked a solo shot to CF, which temporarily appeared to be an outstanding catch by Jake Saltzman but his momentum took him into the fence and his glove fell over the fence–a highly unusual situation, which resulted in a 10-2 lead by the Panthers.
The Lions did not go down without a fight. They scored three runs on RBI singles by Mike Wall, Chris Peralta and Jacob McCarthy to make it a ballgame.
The bullpen of the Panthers locked it down, though, with huge outs by freshman Kevin Glasser and Kieran McLoughlin to close out the game. Luc was awarded the victory, his first of the young season.
With the win, the Panthers improve to 7-4 on the season, while the Lions drop to 3-10. The Panthers will be back in action tomorrow against NYIT, our No. 1 ranked Division-II program on the island.
