Another Friday of baseball in the books, and suddenly we are just a few days away from Spring. With little cold days left on the year, Long Island teams are excited to return from down south and play on their home fields. We saw some winners and some losers in Friday’s five college baseball games. With that being said, here are the recaps from yesterday’s ballgames.
Division-I:
St. John’s: After a rough stretch to begin the season, the Red Storm appear to have turned a corner. They defeated Kansas, 1-0, in walk-off fashion in the 10th inning. Wyatt Muscarella scored from third for the only run of the ballgame. Ace Sean Mooney took the hill, and did not factor in the decision, although, he did everything in his power. The right-handed pitcher fired seven shutout, allowing just two hits and two walks to lower his ERA to 1.47 for the season. Turner French and Gavin Hollowell combined to throw scoreless relief for the next three innings to give the offense a chance. The offense was not at their best–compiling just four hits on the evening; with nobody compiling multi-hit games. They will be back in action today at 1pm at Jack Keiser Stadium at 1pm.
Fordham dropped their second consecutive game, an 8-0 shutout at the hands of Wagner in Towson. They committed four errors and compiled only six hits, not their best effort. Did we jinx them by ranking them No. 1 this past week? Perhaps. In any event, Alvin Melendez was their only player to notch a multi-hit game. They will be back in action at 11am against Cornell as they look to get back in the win column. They are 10-8 overall on the season.
Closing out the Division-I recaps, Hofstra fell to Liberty University, 9-1. This now marks their fifth consecutive loss, as they now own a record of 2-10. Clearly, they were hoping for a better start to the season. All around, this was a forgettable game for the Pride. At the plate, they collected only three hits. Along with making three errors defensively, the Hofstra pitching staff didn’t have their best stuff either. They combined to allow eight earned runs and 12 hits. They hope to end their losing streak against Liberty today at 2 PM.
Division-II:
Adelphi is back in the winner’s column, as they defeated Merrimack 4-0 on Saturday. Through the first nine games of the season, their pitching staff stays strong. Ed Baram got the start for Adelphi and was near perfect. He threw seven innings, allowing three hits, one walk and four punch outs. Seth Sypniak and Tom Ambrosino both shut the door in relief. At the plate, Brandon Morse and Mike Cattani both went 2-4.Lawrence Cicileo went 2-4 with an RBI. Adelphi has a tough contest against Southern New Hampshire University today at noon.
Division-III:
Farmingdale has now dropped back-to-back games on the early season, as they were defeated 10-1 by the University of Massachusetts Boston. From the start of this game, it was never really close. Although Farmingdale strung together seven hits, they could only scratch across one run and left seven men on base. Vincent Rice went 2-3 at the plate for the Rams. As for their pitching, they surrendered eight earned runs, six walks and 11 hits. They also made two errors defensively. Sitting at 2-2 so far on the season, they hope to bounce back against Keuka today at 9:30.
