In 2018, Smithtown West failed to make the postseason for the first time since 2007.
Returning the top two pitchers in their rotation and key players offensively, they believe this year will be different.
“We have a returning group that was able to get a lot of experience in 2018. They understand the work that needs to be put in to have success. We should benefit from that greatly,” said Head Coach Al Nucci.
Smithtown West will compete in League III this season. Their opponents consist of Smithtown East, Hills East, Newfield, Centereach, Copaigue and Northport.
Last season, Smithtown West struggled to put up runs, resulting in four shutout losses. Returning players with varsity experience, they hope this year is different.
“A lot of small ball and manufacturing of runs will be the game plan this year,” said Coach Nucci.
Offensively, they return senior Christian Amoruso, who we named to the Pre-Season All-Long Island team. He will be the centerpiece of their lineup. Last season, Amoruso batted .302 with 12 RBI and 15 SB. As a result, he was named All-League. He also hopes to be a threat on the mound, as he will be either their closer or the game three starter.
Shortstop Erik Reuter also returns to the top of their lineup. He may eat some innings in relief as well. Freshmen (3B) Ryan Setter, (2B) Dom Crema and (C) Nick Esposito all hope to play important roles this season.
On the mound, their ace will be Brian Delaney. In 2018, he was named All-League, posting a 1.85 ERA with 51 strikeouts over 41 innings, allowing only 10 walks. Behind Delaney in the rotation will be senior Brando Kupka, who also returns to their pitching staff.
Handling the pitching staff behind the plate will be Adelphi-commit Vinny Iannuzzi. He possesses fantastic defensive skills along with a strong arm, giving him the ability to shut down the opponents running game. In 2018, he batted .260 with 10 BB..
If Smithtown West is able to scratch across runs and lean on their strong arms, they will be in the mix for playoffs. Having experienced varsity players is a plus, and they plan on using that towards their advantage.
This is a proud program that has produced Nick Grande and Nick Trabacchi in the past three years; two high-end Division-I players. After one down year, they are ready to re-establish themselves as one of Suffolk’s elite.
