Game 1:
After having last week’s double-header was cancelled due to weather, Farmingdale was anxious to get on the field today against Lehman college. They showed they were ready to go, winning the first game 6-2.
Farmingdale immediately got things started in the 1st, when a double-steal plated freshman, Patrick Leach, giving the Rams their first run of the season. The Rams were aggressive all day on the base paths, stealing nine in the first game. Shortstop Brian Perez would immediately follow up with an RBI single to give the Rams a 2-0 lead.
The Rams would threaten but not score until the fourth, when they busted the game open, scoring three runs on a combination of poor defense and situational hitting.
Lehman’s Mark Vargas would try to give the Lightning some life, with a 2-run double in the 5th. They weren’t able to capitalize on other opportunities however, as this would be the only runs scored in the game. Vargas was a bright spot for Lehman, going 2-4 in game one.
Senior, Matthew Constantine, was dealing today, pitching into the 7th and giving up two runs (zero earned). He left in the 7th after getting into some trouble with runners on first and second. Joe Marino would come in and shut the door, giving Farmingdale the 6-2 win.
Game 2:
The double-header wasn’t enough for Lehman and Farmingdale, as they needed extra innings to decide game two. After winning game one of today’s doubleheader, Farmingdale was looking to complete the sweep on the day. In the 11th inning, they did.
It got off to a rocky start when starter, Anthony Visconte walked three of the first four batters to start the game. He got an early exit as a result. Joe Marino came in and got out of the inning with a timely double-play.
Lehman’s Jarret Oehler did a great job keeping Farmingdale’s bats quiet early on, striking out 7 after the first three innings. Farmingdale was able to break through in the 4th, when a bases loaded bunt worked perfectly, giving them the one run lead. Overall on the day it was a dominant performance by Oehler, going 8.1 innings while allowing only one run with 11 strikeouts.
Lehman would tie the game up on groundout from Namir Garcia. It was the only run they were able to get against Marino, who pitched brilliantly over 4.2 innings in relief.
It wasn’t until the 11th inning that Farmingdale was able to score again when with bases loaded and no outs, junior Brian Perez was able to walk it off with a single, giving Farmingdale the sweep on the day.
They will be back in action on Monday against NYU at MCU Park.
