Massapequa grad Adam Mosca crushed a walk-off HR to give SUNY Maritime a dramatic 6-5 victory over Southern Vermont in the season opener at Baseball Heaven. It ended a back-and-forth affair in which the Privateers erased an early 2-0 deficit.
Ryan Serrato (3-for-3) hit a two-run shot off Privateers’ ace Travis Bruinsma in the first inning to open up the scoring. Bruinsma settled in after that, firing shutout ball for the next three innings which allowed his offense to come back.
In the second inning, Jake Vera grounded out to score Shane Sullivan to cut the deficit to 2-1. An unearned run in the third inning tied the game. The following batter, Phil Russo, laced an RBI single during a long at bat to give his team the lead.
In the fourth inning, Vera struck again with an RBI double to extend the lead to 4-2, but the game was far from over.
Serrato’s great afternoon continued with an RBI double to cut the lead to 4-3.
Russo nearly hit a two-run HR, but it was caught at the warning track for a sac fly to extend the lead to 5-3 in the fifth.
Brandon Lara-Mack, who made an outstanding diving catch to end the fifth led off the sixth inning with a solo shot to make it 5-4 and they tied the game up on a Nick Guajardo RBI double. The game nearly got away from the Privateers when Skylar Graff struck a batter with the bases loaded and two outs, but the umpire ruled that not only did he lean into the pitch but it would’ve been a strike which happened to be strike 3 and it ended the inning.
In the bottom of the seventh, Mosca played the role of hero and sent the ball over the fence in left field to deliver the victory for SUNY Maritime.
Game 2 was a 12-5 victory for the Privateers. They briefly trailed 4-0 after a grand slam in the first inning by Cody Sullivan but the Privateers offense was relentless all game and posted 12 runs on 11 hits.
They will be back in action tomorrow at Baseball Heaven against SUNY Plattsburgh beginning at noon.
