Similar to Friday’s results, baseball on Long Island is not off to a hot start. Out of the five colleges that played down south yesterday, we saw two teams come out on top as winners and three teams lose in blowout fashion. Here is how everything shaped out on Saturday.
Following a rough 9-1 loss in their season opener, Hofstra showed some life in the late innings as they defeated Incarnate Word 3-2 in game one of their double header on Saturday, but fell the next game 9-1. In game one, Hofstra was trailing 1-0 heading into the top of the 6th. This would all change on a three-run home run by Rob Weissheier. After the home run, Andrew Mundy solidified the game as he recorded the three-inning save, allowing only one earned run and three hits. Brad Camara was the winning pitcher in this one, going six innings with one earned run, four hits, a walk and three punch outs.
In game two of their double header, the Hofstra pitching was virtually non existent as they suffered a 12-1 defeat. All around, this was a game Hofstra would like to forget before heading back home. Their pitching surrendered 12 earned runs on 11 hits and the defense made one error. Offensively, Hofstra combined for six hits. Ryan Morash and Austin Gauthier both had two hits a piece. Hofstra closes out their four-game series against Incarnate Word today at 1PM.
Saturday afternoon did not show any hope for Fordham as they dropped game two of the series against Texas A&M by a score of 19-6. To put it clear, this game was a mess from the beginning. Defensively, Fordham made seven errors throughout the game. As a Division-1 program and playing against a top caliber team like Texas A&M, this is unacceptable. The pitching wasn’t so hot either as they combined to allow 16 earned runs, 15 hits and 11 walks. Although their defense and pitching was atrocious, their offense showed some signs of hope. Freshman Jason Coules went 2-3 at the plate in his first collegiate start, including his first career home run. Seven other players combined for seven hits. Fordham plays Texas A&M today at 1:05 for their final game of the series.
After a close 3-2 loss on Saturday, St. John’s fell to the #3 ranked UCLA 9-0 Sunday afternoon. If they want to compete with the best, they must be clicking on all cylinders. Offensively and on the mound, this was not the case. UCLA put up a four-spot on two separate occasions, propelling them to the blowout victory. Their lineup collected only three hits and combined for 14 strikeouts. The Red Storm will seek to change their fortune today at 4PM as they close out their series with UCLA.
Another day, another impressive victory for Stony Brook. The Seawolves showed some life in the late innings Saturday afternoon, as they defeated FIU to open up their season with back-to-back victories. Heading into the 9th, Stony Brook trailed 6-4. That would all change on one swing of the bat, as Michael Wilson launched a three-run home run to give them the lead. He finished 3-5 on the day. Following the go ahead home run by Wilson, Connor Clark came in and shut the door for the three-out save. Brandon Bonnano was the winning pitcher in this one, going 3.1 innings in relief, allowing four hits and struck out three. The Seawolves have nothing but momentum heading into their final game of the series today at noon against FIU.
LIU Post suffered another loss against a tough Tampa team Saturday afternoon by a score of 9-2. From the start of this game, it was never really close. The Post pitching staff combined to allow eight runs on 15 hits. Evidently, it was a day they would like to forget. Offensively, sophomore Chris Wasson went 2-4 with 2 RBI. These were his two first collegiate hits and RBI. Anthony Vaglica also went 2-4. The Pioneers will face another tough opponent on Thursday, as they take on the #7 ranked Southern New Hampshire in Myrtle Beach.
