Carey Looking To Progress Towards A Deep Playoff Run

Led by first year Head Coach Doug Robins, Carey will be looking to take  the next step as a program.

In recent years, Carey has found themselves in the postseason but hasn’t made it very far into May. Last season, Carey beat Hewlett and Mineola in the first two rounds, but fell to a talented Division team in the quarterfinals. This year they will try to change their fortune.

Max Effort Training

Conference A2 serves as a division with an equal amount of talented teams. Therefore, it will be interesting to see how Carey fits in with their competition.

In the past few years, Carey has been known for constantly being among the league leaders in home runs. The reason behind this is because of the big bats in their lineup, along with the short porch in right field.

In 2016, Anthony Catapano took home the Diamond Award as the best hitter in the county for Carey. This year, they may have another Diamond Award worthy player on their hands.

Garrett Scavelli will lead the Seahawks offensively this year, as he’s coming off a season where he hit .492 and was named All-County as a sophomore. Expect him to make an even more significant impact this season.

As for the rest of the Carey starting lineup, they will return Riley DeMeo, Devin Hartz and Kevin Bell. Last year’s Carey JV team contained a strong group of players. They will compete for starting positions come April.

The Seahawks lineup contains great speed and athleticism from top to bottom. Expect Coach Robins to use this towards his advantage and be extremely aggressive on the base paths.

Although Carey has a strong lineup, they may experience some trouble on the mound in the beginning of the season. Due to graduating seniors, the Seahawks lose over 100 innings pitched from 2018. This number may be significant and hint at some inexperience, but it’s next man up for Coach Robins.

Molloy-commit Conor Huckemeyer and Concordia-commit Matt Cosgrove will be looked upon to lead the Seahawks on the mound. Considering both are seniors, they have learned from previous varsity pitchers and will use that towards their advantage.

Carey opens up their season against a talented Bellmore JFK team on April 8th. Coming into the season as one of the more underrated teams, don’t be surprised if Carey ends up at the top of Conference A2 by May.
