Tommy Reifler is a middle infielder for Garden City HS and the HDMH Titans. He recently committed to Binghamton University. We spoke about his success on the field and a number of other topics. Here’s what he had to say.
Can you tell our audience about your experience with the college recruiting process and how you decided to commit to Binghamton?
My recruiting process all happened during the early summer. The coaching staff at Binghamton watched me play in June and followed me throughout July. I decided to commit to Binghamton because I really liked the program, coaches and the academics fit what I was looking for.
Garden City has been very successful the past few seasons. What have you enjoyed the most? What do you think it will take to get over the top and beat a team like Wantagh?
I’ve enjoyed all the relationships I’ve formed with my teammates over the years. To get to the top I think we will have to continue working hard and have trust in each other.
Who are some people who have had the biggest influence on your baseball career?
My Dad has had the greatest influence on my baseball career. He’s always pushing me to play my best and I’m grateful for that. Also, my cousin Mike Ferriggi has been my hitting instructor all my life.
Who are your favorite players in baseball?
My favorite player in baseball right now is Didi Gregorius. I admire how hard he plays and how much fun he has.
You are known for your defense, speed and contact ability–what do you do to improve your game?
I try my best to stay within myself so I can understand and execute my role. I’m working in the off-season to improve on what I do well as well as increase my power.
What are your goals for 2019?
My goal for 2019 is to lead Garden City to a county championship.
What has been your biggest thrill in your baseball career?
The biggest thrill in my baseball career so far has been winning the Cincy Flames National Tournament 3 straight years. A close second would be Game 3 of the County Championship against Wantagh my sophomore year.
You play for the vaunted HDMH Titans. What has that experience been like?
Playing for the HDMH Titans has been the best time of my baseball life. Playing alongside some of the best players on Long Island has definitely made me a better player. Playing under Coach Gregg Sarra can certainly be tough but he never fails to make us better people and players. More importantly, the friendships I’ve made from being part of this team the past 3 years will last a lifetime.
