Lights-Out Pitching & Warantz HR Lead 17u LI Titans to Victory

The sky was dark and gloomy. It seemed inevitable that rain would take a day of baseball away from the 17u LI Titans-Gutes and LI Baseball. Both teams were determined, however, to get one by Mother Nature and play their Boys of Summer matchup.

Despite the weather, the Titans and LI Baseball put together a picturesque 7-inning game that embodied the beauty of the sport.

A performance highlighted by powerful pitching outings. A wet ball seemed to have absolutely no effect on this game.

LI Baseball starting pitcher Chris Manzi set the tone for the game early striking out five batters in the first two innings. In the 3rd inning, Drew Silverman led off for the Titans with a double. After moving to 3rd on a fly out to center, Ed Bassett brought Silverman home on an RBI groundout to 3rd.

In a game that featured only 5 hits, Spenser Warantz delivered the big hit of the game for the Titans. Warantz led off the top of the 4th inning with a Solo Home-Run over the left field wall.

That would be the last run to come across the plate in the game.

Manzi finished with six innings of work, allowing two runs on four hits and tallying eight strikeouts. Volpe came in relief of Manzi in the 7th, and struck out the side.

LIB wasn’t the only team to have a fantastic pitching performance, as the Titans threw a 3 pitcher combined 1-hitter. Hahn, Kyle Murphy, and Mike Knopf all delivered dominant outings on the mound to help bring their team to victory. The 3 pitchers combined for nine strikeouts and only allowed a single to LIB 3-batter Jake Reyer in the 4th inning.

It was a great team performance from each side, and player of the game Warantz made sure to point that out. Rather than discuss his solo HR he humbly decided to spend time praising his teammates on a hard earned win.

“I’m happy that we got another win, our 15th in a row. Credit to my team, we’re missing a couple of players. We’re missing our 2-hitter, our 3-hitter, and our catcher, but we still won 2-0.”

A classy gesture to cap off a game that oozed pure class throughout.
