Seven East Coast Jays Pitchers Combine on No-Hitter

It was a tremendous day for the East Coast Jays pitching staff, using seven pitchers to throw a combined no hitter in a 2-1 victory over the Oil City Bandits.

Jack Rand started off the game on the mound for the Jays, striking out two in his one inning of work. In the bottom half of the first, the Jays scored the only runs they would need off of Bandits’ starting pitcher, Dan Kelleher. Lucas Rubenstein worked a walk, and then worked his way over to third base after two passed balls. Philip Piro then worked a walk and stole second base. Kelleher then uncorked a wild pitch, on which Rubenstein scored, and Piro moved to third. Dan Dalrymple then hit a ground ball to the second baseman, on which Piro scored to give the Jays a 2-0 lead.

Joseph Detommaso was the second pitcher for the Jays. After he got the first batter he faced to ground out to the shortstop, the following batter, Jason Sebastiano, also hit a groundball to the shortstop, who then threw the ball away, allowing Sebastiano to reach second. He later came around to score on a wild pitch, cutting his team’s deficit to 2-1, a score which would stand for the remainder of the game.

The next pitcher in for the Jays was Piro. After getting a quick first out, he let up a walk. That runner was quickly erased, however, as Piro picked him off at first. The next batter then flew out to center field to end the inning. Piro was followed up by Kyle Barth, who struck out two batters in his one inning of work.

The fifth pitcher for the Jays in five innings was Dalrymple. After retiring his first two batters, he got into some trouble. A walk and an error by his third baseman put two runners on with two outs. However, the next batter hit a chopper to the third baseman, who redeemed himself by making the play and getting the batter out at first.

Nick Arciold was the next pitcher for the Jays, who was impressive in his one inning of work, striking out the side. He was followed up by Nick Baldassare, who looked to close it out. After getting his first batter to ground out to second, he then struck out the next two, to secure the victory, and no-hitter for his team.

On how his team was successful, Coach Brian Derschowitz said, “Every kid was ready to throw. Off-speed was working” further saying “Not too many mistakes, the fielders played well.” He was also complimentary toward the opposing pitcher, mentioning that “the other kid threw a nice game himself”.

Bandits starting pitcher Dan Kelleher’s strong performance should not be forgotten about, as he struck out eight batters in six innings of one hit ball.

With the victory, the East Coast Jays improve their record to 3-9, while the loss drops the Oil City Bandits’ record to 3-7.
