Joey Savino: Why I Chose Elon

(Editor’s Note: Joey Savino was voted Axcess League 2 MVP by our audience following his junior season in which he anchored the Connetquot T-Birds rotation and went 6-1 with a 0.67 ERA. He was outstanding when it mattered the most, firing a CG shutout against Newfield and again against Bay Shore the following week. He dominated at the New York State Games and parlayed that into accepting a scholarship to play for Elon University in North Carolina. The following words are his own…)

Man, it all started at the Battle of the Border tournament when coach McGrath first saw me. Ever since then he went to every game I pitched. After the game I pitched in Georgia he invited me down to take a visit and me and my dad drove down to the University. Once we were there we knew it was going to be the one. I fell in love with campus; it was beautiful. It was very open and the gardens and fountains were stunning. The buildings were built with nice brick and it was just beautiful.

The baseball field as well as the other fields were awesome as well. It was everything I was looking for in a campus and the education part fit right in since they had what I want to major in.

The coaches were awesome and I could really tell they wanted me to play baseball for them. Elon baseball is also great. They finished 2nd last year in the tough CAA conference but the coaches expect to win it every year. Playing in the CAA is what I wanted to do and since they play teams like Hofstra and Northeastern and my parents would be able to come see some of my games. The coaches seemed as if they were on the same page as me and wanted to accomplish the same goal as I wanted to. They made an offer that was too good to pass up and after talking to my coach and to my parents, we thought that Elon University was the one for me! I want to thank my family, friends and coaches for giving me this opportunity and preparing me for this. I am truly blessed! #GoPhoenix
