As the rain drops fell on the field of NYIT, pitchers on both squads were able to keep the hits to a minimum in the Diamond Spikes 3-2 victory over LIB Prime Lodato.
While the rain was falling for the start of the game, it looked early on as if the rain will have a major effect on how the pitchers would perform.
Both teams did not waste any time in putting an early run on the board and they did it in the same fashion.
The scoring started in the top of the first inning for the LIB Prime. Nick Bell reached base on a walk and after he got to third base, a pass ball through the legs of the catcher resulted in Bell coming home for the first run of the game.
The Diamond Spikes quickly responded once they got the chance. In the bottom of the first inning, Elvis Zavala led off with a double to right field and he too came around to score after making his way to third and scoring on a pass ball as well.
The starting pitchers for both the Diamond Spikes and LIB Prime each went three innings a piece.
Diamond Spikes Ryan Bowe allowed one run on no hits while striking out two and walking three in his three innings of work and LIB Prime starter Kyle Pellegrino allowed one run on four hits while striking out one and walking four batters.
The Diamond Spikes had a chance to take the lead in the bottom of the third when Nolan Izzo lead off with a single and Christian Pilliteri followed with a triple to right field. However, the Diamond Spikes did not take the lead thanks to the great defense play by the LIB Prime and throwing out Izzo at the plate.
The Diamond Spikes finally broke through again in the following inning. Tom Berenes, Alex Berlin and Erick Campoverde all reached base to force the bases loaded and an RBI single by Ian Murray broke the tie and gave the Diamond Spikes the 2-1 lead. They then added another run on a sacrifice fly from Zavala, giving them a 3-1 lead.
The LIB Prime got their offense going in the top of the fifth. After a leadoff hit by pitch, Zach Zarra knocked a single to right field giving the LIB Prime their first hit of the game. After another batter hit by a pitch loaded the bases with no outs, a double play resulted in the second run for the LIB Prime as Paulie DePaulis scored to make it 3-2. With Zarra on third base, he tried to do a straight steal of home plate and was thrown out to end the inning and the LIB Prime threat.
Diamond Spikes Alex Berlin came on to save the game and give them the 3-2 win to improve to 5-5 in the Boys of Summer 16u Scout division. The LIB Prime fell to 4-5 in the division.
