The Diamond Spikes were able to hold off the East Coast Jays late inning comeback on Tuesday at PAL Sports Complex as they were on their way to a 4-3 victory.
Early offense and good pitching helped the Diamond Spikes prevail on Tuesday. They were able to score three quick runs right out of the gate and tacked on a fourth in the second inning. From there, their pitching did enough to hold off the Jays offense.
Diamond Spikes starting pitcher David Safirstein pitched three nearly perfect innings. He struck out six, didn’t walk a batter and the only hit he allowed hit the second base bag.

After a scoreless bottom of the first inning, the Diamond Spike again went back to work on offense. More walks and a pass ball in the inning allowed for another Diamond Spikes run to cross home plate making it an early 4-0 lead for them.
The East Coast Jays starting pitcher Lucas Rubenstein had difficulty finding the strike zone in this one. In his three innings of work, he walked eight batters and allowed three earned runs. He did only allow one hit but it was a big two RBI single.
The Jays offense was held in check early on until Jack Rand hit an RBI single to put the Jays on the board and shorten their deficit to 4-1.
In the bottom of the seventh inning, the Jays made the game very interesting. The Jays were able to get runners on first and second base after they reached on a hit by pitch and a walk. With two outs Jordan Caceres lined a double down the right field line, scoring both runners and making it a 4-3 game. The Jays came up short as the next batter flew out to right field and end the ballgame.
Despite scoring four runs the Diamond Spikes only recorded two hits. However, they were helped out by the Jays pitching staff as they were walked 11 times. The win improves the Diamonds Spike to 4-5 in the Boys of Summer 16u Scout Division.
For the East Coast Jays, their offense produced five hits and walked four times but it was not enough to get passed the Diamond Spikes. They now fall to 1-7.
