It was a pitcher’s duel between the Rising Star Junior Ducks and LI Titans, with the Junior Ducks claiming the 4-0 win on Saturday.
This game determined which team would move on in the Blue-Chip Prospects 18u Great American Classic tournament. The Junior Ducks came into the game with a 2-0 record, while the Titans were sporting a 1-0-1 record. The winner would advance to the tournament’s playoffs.
Thanks to great pitching from Junior Ducks starting pitcher Bobby Vath, the Junior Ducks advanced in the tournament.
In this low-offensive affair, both teams combined for seven hits and all seven were singles. The Junior Ducks had the majority, five, while the Titans were only able to muster two hits thanks to Vath.
Vath went six scoreless innings while allowing only two hits and striking out 10. The only two hits that Vath allowed were to the first batter of the game and the leadoff batter in the top of the fourth inning. He had his fastball command all game long which led to only a handful of Titans batters putting good swings on the ball.
It took a while until the scoring started in this one. In the bottom of the fourth, the Junior Ducks Dylan Brid reached base safely on a throwing error from the Titans. Brid took advantage of the error and quickly stole second base. He then took off for third base later in the inning and was able to cross home plate as the throw to third sailed over the third basemen’s head and Brid scored the first run of the game.
The Junior Ducks broke the game open in the bottom of the sixth when they strung together four of their five hits. After the first two runners reached base in the inning, errors by the Titans brought both runs in to increase the Junior Ducks lead to 3-0. Brid, who reached on the error, came around to score the final Junior Ducks run on a RBI single from the Ducks’ Russo.
Even though there was not a lot of offense for the Junior Ducks, they were able to win this game and move on in the tournament thanks to their defensive performance and Vath’s performance on the mound.
