Hitter’s Club Hawkeye’s 17u team defeated Team Steel 17u 5-0 at Hofstra University on Tuesday thanks to early offense and great pitching from their staff.
It did not take long for the Hitter’s Club Hawkeyes to get the scoring started. They came to bat in the bottom of the first and scored three quick runs to jump out to an early lead.
Chris Lydon got the offense started with a base hit to start the inning for the Hawkeyes and he came around to score the first run of the game on an infield error. With a man on, Matt LaSala drove in another run with a single to add to the Hawkeyes lead. Jon Cohen capped off the three-run inning with a sacrifice fly to right field, giving the Hawkeyes an early 3-0 lead going into the second inning.
Hawkeyes starting pitcher Chris McLaughlin delivered a strong performance for his club. He allowed two hits and walked one while striking out seven Team Steel batters over three innings of work.
It took until the fifth inning for the scoring to pick back up and it was the Hawkeyes who delivered two more runs to add to their lead. After a leadoff walk, Brian Primm drove in a run on his RBI single. The next batter, LaSala, drove in the fifth Hawkeye run, and his second of the game, with a sacrifice fly to right field.
After McLaughlin was taken out of the game after three innings of work, the Hawkeyes used three more pitchers to keep Team Steel shutout for the rest of the game.
This win propels the Hitter’s Club Hawkeyes to a 3-4 record in the 17u division in the Boys of Summer league. They will next play on June 26 against the Rising Star Jr Ducks.
As for Team Steel, the loss drops them to 0-2 on the season in the Boys of Summer league and their next game will be June 20 against the HDMH Titans.
