Sayville, coming off of extra innings thriller against Southampton, clobbered Rocky Point on Friday, winning by a score of 14-4. Notre Dame-commit Brock Murtha had a strong day on the mound, going five strong innings, allowing only two runs with eight strikeouts.
A sloppy first inning by Rocky Point resulted in Sayville taking a 2-0 lead. A leadoff walk was followed by a double, which led to Murtha being intentionally walked to load the bases. Jake Russo followed up with a hard ground ball to 3rd base, but an error allowed all runners to safely advance. The following batter, Ryan Wilson, hit a hard ground ball to the shortstop, who threw the ball to the second baseman for one out, but was ultimately unable to turn the double play. The Eagles escaped the inning with no further damage, as Sayville took an early 2-0 lead.
Sayville broke it open in the second inning. After a pair of singles and a passed ball put runners on second and third, Rocky Point again elected to intentionally walk Murtha to load the bases. Two more walks, an error and a single made it a 6-0 game. With the bases loaded, Zach Liotta hit a long single to clear the bases, giving Sayville a comfortable 9-0 lead.
In the bottom half of the inning, Rocky Point chipped away at their deficit. Three consecutive singles to lead off the inning resulted in their first run, as well as having runners on the corners. A sacrifice fly brought in another run, and Sayville’s lead was still a comfortable 9-2.
Sayville came right back in the top half of the third. An error and single led to an RBI single from Wilson, extending the lead to 10-2. A groundout and sacrifice fly later, and Sayville was back to being up by 9 runs.
Three more runs were tacked on by Sayville in the top of the fifth inning, to make it 14-2. Rocky Point pushed across one more run in each the bottom of the sixth, and the bottom of the seventh to ultimately bring the score to 14-4.
The Sayville offense saw contributions from their entire lineup, with every starter scoring at least one run, and all but one starter also driving in a run. They hope to carry this momentum into Saturday, when they will once again face off against Rocky Point to try to advance into the Suffolk Class A county finals against Shoreham-Wading River; the reigning champs.
