For the first frame of this ballgame, it seemed we had a competitive game on our hands. Fast forward twenty minutes, and things got out of hand quickly.
The Garden City Trojans triumphed to an 11-3 victory over Bellmore JFK on Monday afternoon, securing them a spot in the winners bracket where they will have the opportunity to advance to the quarterfinals.
Early in the ballgame, Hofstra-commit Robert Lucano found himself in situations with runners in scoring position, but continued to work his way out of them. He finished five innings on the mound without allowing an earned run.
“I didn’t have my control right from the get-go, it was just one of those weird things but my defense behind me was great and I made a couple good pitches in tough situations. I know I loaded the bases a couple of times but the defense bailed me out and you have to tip your cap to them,” he added.
Bellmore JFK got to Lucano early, as they scored one run in the opening frame. However, the Trojan offense is what propelled them to victory.
Garden City answered the Bellmore JFK threat quickly with five runs of their own in the bottom of the first inning. Garrett Going and Michael Rasquin each had an RBI to give the Trojans an early lead, and then things broke open quick.
With one swing of the bat, Jake Fraher smacked his first career varsity home run over the left field fence and suddenly it was a 5-1 ballgame.
“It felt great, there was two strikes I was just trying to put the ball in play and it went,” said Fraher. “Honestly I didn’t think it was getting out I was pretty shocked,” he added.
Garden City proceeded to scratch across a run in the bottom of the second inning, and there was no looking back from there. For the rest of the game, they held a comfortable lead. When it was all said and done, the Trojans won by eight runs and secured themselves a spot in the winner’s bracket.
“We scored five early on and it was good to see the boys not let up, we’ve had games where we fall asleep early and let other teams creep back into it so it was nice to see the boys keep putting runs on the board,” said Coach Izzo.
With the playoff victory, Garden City will play Bethpage tomorrow in the winner’s bracket with a chance to put themselves in an extremely significant position for the remainder of playoffs. Expect the Garden City bats to stay hot.
