Matt Kohn Comes Up Big in Crucial Victory for Hewlett

Southpaw Matt Kohn fired six strong innings, allowing just one run against Bellmore JFK and ripped an RBI single in the second inning in a crucial 3-1 victory for the Hewlett Bulldogs. They have won the first two games of a three-game set that they needed to sweep in order to leapfrog Bellmore in the standings of Nassau A-2.

The Bulldogs got off to a quick start offensively in this one.

Matt Kim smashed an RBI single up the middle to score Jason Barry, who reached on an infield error. They added two runs in the second inning on back-to-back RBI singles by Anthony Isayev and Kohn. It appeared they might break the game open, but Cougars’ starter Matt Levine really settled in and found his rhythm.

Considering the playoff ramifications, the Bulldogs played very laid back and loose in this game, which Kohn stated is typical for them.

“We definitely like to keep things chill and keep our heads in the game,” said the senior.

Kohn was stellar through out, using a steady diet of change ups to keep the opposing batters off balance. The biggest threat he faced was in the bottom of the fifth when he walked two batters to bring up Jason Coules, one of the most dangerous hitters on the island. He struck him out, stranding both runners and ending the jam.

The Cougars finally got on the board in the seventh inning on a solo shot from Dylan Judd to cut the lead to 3-1. He was able to finish the inning with the lead. Kohn’s day was complete and he gave way to Jason Barry, who allowed a two-out double but fanned Coules to end the game.

Game 3 will be very important as the winner will get third place in the conference and the loser will settle for fourth.
