Eddie Ye, Sean Rogers Lead Valley Stream North to Big Win over Lynbrook

With Chris Manzi out with the flu and another pitcher battling an injury, Valley Stream North called upon Eddie Ye to make the emergency start. He passed the test with flying colors and his offense went to work early as the Spartans wound up completing an 11-0 shutout in five innings over Lynbrook.

“He’s been a relief pitcher this entire season, we needed him to step up and fill in and he put zeros up all day,” said Head Coach Phil Sanfilippo. “It was a great job by him and it was a great win for us,” he added.

The top of the first inning lasted 35 minutes.

The Spartans displayed exceptional patience at the plate, drawing three walks and they also benefited from some shoddy defense. They scored their first run on a wild pitch that scored Joseph Gisonda. They added another run on an RBI single by Thomas Graziano. After a single by Peter Knapp, a routine flyball was dropped by the center fielder to bring in another run. James Perciballi made it hurt with a two-run single to extend the lead to 5-0.

That was it for the starting pitcher, who was replaced by Phil Piro. The southpaw ended the marathon inning with a fly out to left field.

Ye worked around a two-out walk in the first inning to make sure he put up a zero.

Piro and Ye exchanged zeros in the second and third innings before the Spartans really broke it open in the fourth inning with throwing error by the first baseman and an RBI single our Digmi Player of the Game Sean Rogers to score James Saracino.

In the top of the fifth, the leadoff batter was retired before another big rally for the Spartans.

A single, two walks and a hit by pitch extended the lead to 8-0, and a sacrifice fly by Saracino increased it to 9-0. Rogers smoked one just inside the first base line to score two runs and break it open at 11-0.

Ye just needed to get three outs without yielding more than one run, but he worked around a leadoff single to finish off the five inning shutout.

With the victory, VSN improves to 11-4 on the season and appear to be one of the elites in Nassau Class A.
