College baseball winds down its final weeks with these teams still going strong. Take a look at who excelled:
Division-I:
Hofstra: Hofstra defeated Charleston, 7-1, to help stop a six-game losing streak. John Rooney’s brilliant campaign continued Friday, going nine innings, giving up just five hits and one run in line for his sixth victory of the season against zero losses. His ERA drops to 0.97 for the season. Hofstra was able to grab their first runs of the game in the sixth behind a Mikey Riesner RBI sac bunt. That was followed up by an Austin Gauthier two-run single to give Hofstra the lead 3-1. They proceeded to tack on four more in the eighth, good enough to put them at 14-15 on the season and 4-8 in conference play.
Fordham: Fordham was defeated, 5-3, in eleven innings against George Washington. After trailing by one in the ninth inning, Matt Tarabek singled to tie the game and send it to extras. In the eleventh, singles from Steven Barmikian and Mark Osis helped give George Washington a two-run cushion. The Rams only had seven hits on the afternoon, four of them coming from Billy Godrick and C. J. Vasquez.
St. John’s: St. John’s defeated Georgetown, 6-3. Sean Mooney went five shutout, giving up just four hits and striking out seven. The top of the lineup was powerful for the Red Storm, as their first three hitters went a combined 8-for-13, with two RBI and one run scored. DH Robert Boselli III had a sac fly RBI in the fifth and a solo homerun in the seventh. The Red Storm are now 24-10 on the season.
Division-II:
Molloy: The fell to St. Thomas Aquinas, 9-8, despite a furious attempt at a comeback. The bats struggled all day for the Lions, until the ninth inning. Spartans’ starter Chris Cepeda was stellar on the mound, going eight innings, giving up just five hits and striking out 12. Things changed when he came out, though, as pinch hitter Jake McCarthy launched a three-run homerun, his first career to cut the deficit to 9-4. They added another run on an RBI single by Angelo Navetta, and they came inches from tying the game when Elijah Leerdam just narrowly missed a grand slam but it hit the top of the fence and stayed in play for a double. They cut the lead to 9-8 when Sean Hogan stayed hot with an RBI hit with runners on second-and-third but it only scored one. It would’ve been a historic comeback trailing eight runs in the ninth inning. They are still sitting in the driver’s seat in the ECC, but the Lions and Spartans are even in the loss column and there are three games still to play between the two teams this weekend.
LIU Post: The Pioneers defeated Mercy, 14-5. In a total team effort the Pioneers had 16 total hits on the afternoon, three of them each coming off the bat of Ramger Iglesias and Joe Spitaleri. Zach Fritz had four RBI on the day. Anthony Vaglica went 2-for-3 with a three-run homerun, three runs and one double. LIU Post scored in every inning except the first and the ninth to help improve to 23-12 on the season.
NYIT: NYIT’s game against Bridgeport was cancelled.
Division-III:
Old Westbury: Old Westbury climbed back from four runs down to defeat Lehman 10-9 in 10 innings. Lehman jumped out to a 7-0 lead with seven in the second inning but the Panthers fought back. The first four hitters combined for 10 hits, seven RBI and four doubles. Chris Sanicola gave Old Westbury much needed relief, closing out the final three innings and giving up just one hit. Jesse Russo provided the game winning RBI double in the tenth inning.
Juco:
Nassau: The Lions won their game 10-2, but there are no statistics available for the game.
Suffolk: Suffolk defeated Bronx Community College 9-4 in game one of the double header.
The Broncos split the double header with a 5-2 victory over Suffolk in game two. There was no box score provided for either game.
