Several teams were in action on Friday. The teams went 5-3 on the afternoon. Take a look at who stood out:
Division-I
Hofstra: Hofstra defeated Delaware 9-0 behind ace John Rooney. The LHP continued his impressive season, putting together a complete game, two-hit shutout. He notched 11 strikeouts making it the third time this season he’s put up double digit strikeouts in a game. The bats did plenty of work as right fielder Teddy Cillis went 4-for-4 with two doubles and one RBI while Matt Siedem had three hits and smacked his first career HR. The Pride banged out 17 hits on the afternoon, good enough to put them at 13-9 on the season.
Fordham: Fordham was defeated by Rhode Island, 6-2. Rhode Island struck first in the seventh inning on a Brett McManus three-run double down the line. They piled on two more runs in the top of the eighth to extend their lead to 5-0. The Rams battled back in the bottom of the frame with two runs but it would not be enough.
St. Johns: St. John’s bats played a big role in the Red Storm’s 6-1 victory over Villanova. The Red Storm had nine hits on the afternoon, and made the most of them. Seven different batters had a hit, including catcher Wyatt Mascaraella who scored two runs in part of his 2-for-3 day. A quality 6.1 innings from starter Sean Mooney helped him earn his sixth win of the season and St. John’s 15th win.
Division-II:
Molloy: Molloy defeated Mercy, 9-6. Mercy stuck to a 6-4 lead going into the eighth inning until the Lions bats exploded for five runs, putting them up 9-6. An Angelo Navetta two-run triple got the rally started, followed by three more hits to bring in three more runs. Shawn Klotsche went two innings of one-hit ball to close out the game, giving Molloy its 15th win of the season.
LIU Post: LIU Post defeated Queens 3-1 in 10 innings. Starter James Varela battled for 10 innings, giving up eight hits and one earned run in line for his seventh win of the season. It was his sixth consecutive complete game. After neither team scored a run in the first nine innings, the Pioneers finally broke out in the tenth on a two-run Ramger Iglesias single. Dave Brehm added one more in the same frame to give LIU Post a comfortable lead. The win puts the Pioneers at 16-11 on the season.
NYIT: NYIT came up just short to St. Thomas Aquinas, losing 2-0. DJ Masuck takes the loss on the day after going eight innings, giving up two runs and eight hits. The two runs came courtesy of an Anthony Shkelja homerun in the eighth inning. Second baseman Joey Fusco had a nice day at the plate, going 3-for-4.
Queens: Queens battled to the end of the tenth inning but came up short to LIU Post 3-1. Starter Michael Lamneck went nine innings, giving up just five hits and striking out nine but it was not enough. In the tenth, reliever James McGee surrendered three runs on three hits and two walks. The Knights tacked on one run in the bottom of the frame off a Sam Siegel single.
Division-III:
Old Westbury: Old Westbury’s game against John Jay was cancelled.
Juco:
Suffolk: Suffolk defeated Kingsborough 14-0 in five innings. Shortstop Marc Laboy piled five RBIs on two hits including a grand slam. Jake Ford went 2-for-3 with three RBI and two runs as well. The Sharks pounded out 11 hits and six walks in just 23 at bats. James Matera had a nice game as well, scoring three runs and knocking two RBIs.
