March 31 Recap

Below are the results from Saturday March 31 slate of games, which saw plenty of action in our area.

Division I:

Stony Brook: The Sea Wolves split a double header with the UMass-Lowell Riverhawks, losing game one 6-5 in eight innings, and winning game two 9-8. Game one saw freshman John Tuccillo and sophomore Nick Grande each hit home runs to help Stony Brook jumped to a 5-1 lead. But, UML came back with four runs in the sixth and later came back in the eighth.

Stony Brook scored nine runs on only seven hits, six of which came from Grande, senior Bobby Honeyman and junior Dylan Resk each getting two. Senior Cole Creighton earned his second win shutting out the final two innings in relief.

Grande now has 11 multi-hit games this season with the two today. Tucillo recorded his first career home run on his three-run shot in game one. Stony Brook is now 4-2 in America East play. The Sea Wolves take on Iona College Tuesday, April 3 at 3:30 p.m to end their 16-game homestand.

Fordham: Split their DH with Manhattan, losing 1-0 and winning 9-1. Anthony DiMeglio recorded the victory to improve to 3-0 on the season. He fired seven innings, yielding just two hits without a batter and striking out eight batters. His offense put up three runs in the third and four runs in the sixth and that was more than enough. Matt Tarabek and Justin Machado each drove in two runs. They will be back in action on Tuesday.

Hofstra: Very tough loss for the Pride, who led 3-0 entering the ninth inning against Towson. Matt Weissheier, who had fired six shutout innings was in line for the victory. Parker Quinn’s RBI single and Vito Friscia’s HR had given them a lead but Towson mounted a furious rally and a walk-off grand slam by Richie Palacios shocked the Pride and sealed the 5-3 victory. They will be back in action today at 1pm in Maryland.

St. John’s: They dropped the rubber game of their three-game series against Minnesota by the score of 6-3. They stranded 12 runners. The bright spot was John Valente extending his hitting streak to 24 games and Robert Boselli III and Luke Stampfl each recording three hits. They fall to 13-9 on the season, they will be back in action on Tuesday against St. Peter’s.

Division II:

Adelphi: The Adelphi Panthers were swept by the Le Moyne Dolphins in a double header by the scores of 11-6 in game one and 7-2 in game two. Senior Michael Tarpey gets the loss throwing two innings giving up four runs (one earned). Junior Thomas Colombo went 3-for-5 with a HR and senior Stephen Withers went 2-for-4 with a walk. Le Moyne completes the series sweep. Adelphi falls to 8-11-1 and 1-5 in conference play. Adelphi’s next game is at Southern Connecticut State Tuesday, April 3 at 3:30 p.m.

LIU Post: The Pioneers swept the DH from Bridgeport by the scores of 10-6 and 5-3. Mike Stiles recorded the victory in the first game, throwing 4.2 shutout innings of relief with seven strikeouts for his first win of the series. He came in with one out in the fifth after Julien Arcos departed. The Pioneers smacked 16 hits, Joe Spitaleri and Joe Piscatelli led the way with three each, Rob Andreoli drove in three runs with the go-ahead sac fly in the eighth and Anthony Vaglica extended the lead with a solo HR. In the second game, Joe Valentino was solid, tossing 6.1 innings for his first win of the season. Brian Tinney came on in relief to record the last two outs. Spitaleri had two hits and three RBI. They improve to 15-10 on the season and 6-2 in conference play.

Molloy: Molloy swept Queens College in the Saturday double header winning 3-1 in game one and 5-2 in game two. Senior Jack McCarty went 3-for-5 with a RBI and sophomore Sean Hogan went 3-for-4 as well in game one. Senior Kevin Hiss tossed eight innings giving up one run and striking out nine.

In game two, sophomore Jake Saltzman went 2-for-4 with two RBI. Redshirt-sophomore Timothy Panetta earned the win with his two scoreless innings in relief, and senior Shawn Klotsche got his fourth save of 2018 getting four outs. Molloy sits 6-0 in the ECC and 14-12 overall. The Lions finish their series against Queens College Monday, April 2 at 3:30 p.m. at the Mitchel Field Athletic Complex.

Pace: The Pace Setters split their double header with Southern Connecticut State with a 3-1 in game one and a 5-2 loss in game two. Senior Ryan Aquino tossed eight scoreless innings alllowing no walks and struck out five in game one. Freshamn Matt Almonte went 2-for-5 with a RBI. Graduate Ryan Crowley, senior Michael Gulino, and sophomore Brian Bohlander also had two hits in the contest.

In game two, SCSU broke out with three runs in the fifth to make the game 5-1. Junior Alex Busby got the loss giving up three runs (one earned) over four innings. Crowley notched two more hits. Pace stands at 10-7-1 on the year adn 5-3 in conference play. Pace begins a 12-game road stretch starting Tuesday, April 3 at the University of New Haven at 3:30 p.m.

Division III:

St. Joseph’s: The Golden Eagles of St. Joseph’s split their double header against Merchant Marine losing game one 7-4 in game one, and winning 2-1 in game two. Senior Dylan Piscitelli went 2-4 in game one  and 2-3 in game two, having four of the team’s 11 hits on the day. Senior Nick Clememte got the loss after tossing 5.1 innings allowing five runs (four earned). Senior P.J. Martino earned his third win pitching a complete game in game two allowing one run while striking out six.

The next game for the Golden Eagles is Tuesday, April 3 when they face John Jay at 4 p.m.

Juco:

Nassau CC: We covered the game and you can read about it here.

Suffolk CC: They swept their DH by the scores of 10-1 and 7-4. In game one, Nick Morena threw a gem, striking out 10 and allowing only 1 hit. Jeff Towle went 2-for-3 with a HR and 5 RBI while Jimmy Mattera went 3-for-4 and Mike Pascuzzi went 3-for-3 with two runs scored. In game two, Tyler Schmid struck out 14 batters and allowed four hits. Anthony Scheller and Cameron Lopez both went 2-for-4.
