March 24 Recap

A busy day for teams on the island with 10 teams taking the field. There were seven double headers as well. Teams went 13-5. See who shined:

Division-I

St. Johns: St. John’s defeated Binghamton 4-0. Starter Sean Mooney went 5.1 scoreless innings for his fifth win of the season. The Red Storm took a 1-0 lead early courtesy of a John Valente groundout. They continued to cruise behind strong pitching until the ninth, where they scored three runs to extend their lead. St. Johns moves to 10-7 on the season.

Stony Brook: Stony Brook swept the double header against Quinnipiac, winning 10-4 and 5-1. In game one, the Sea Wolves jumped out to an early start, scoring four in the first and two in the second. Chris Hamilton launched a first inning grand slam to put Stony Brook up early. The blast was his first of the season. The Sea Wolves’ right fielder, Michael Wilson, provided a late game two-run double to extend Stony Brook’s lead.

The Sea Wolves stayed hot in the second game of the double header, beating Quinnipiac 5-1. Stony Brook broke loose in the fourth inning, plating the first two runs of the game. They then opened the lead in the following inning with three more runs, two of them coming from a Nick Grande single and a Michael Wilson triple. Bret Clarke was phenomenal in his six innings of work, allowing only one run off three hits, good for his third win of the season.

Hofstra: Hofstra was swept by UNCW in both games of the double header, losing 5-3 and 6-2. In game one, Hofstra secured a 3-0 lead early in the first inning with the only RBI charged to Mikey Reisner. After that the Seahawks chipped away at the lead, scoring two in the third, one in the seventh and two in the eighth. Hofstra notched only two hits on the afternoon. Starter Seamus Brazill was pulled after two innings of work.

In game two, the Pride lost 6-2. Once again Hofstra struggled with the bat, as the UNCW pitching staff held them to just four hits. In the fifth, the Seahawks opened the game up. A two-run double from Ryan Jeffers was followed up by a two-run homerun from Mason Berne (his fourth of the weekend) to give UNCW a commanding 6-0 lead at that point. The losses put the Pride at 10-6 on the season, and 1-2 in conference play.

Fordham: Fordham defeated Davidson 5-2. Davidson held an early 2-0 lead in the second inning, courtesy of an Alex Mardiney two-run single. The Rams battled back in the sixth scoring three runs, two of them coming from a Jake Mackenzie triple. They padded their lead with one run in the seventh and one in the ninth. Starter Ben Greenberg improved to 3-0 on the season, going seven impressive innings of one run ball. The win puts the Rams at 11-7-1 on the season.

Division-II:

NYIT: NYIT lost both games in the double header against LIU Post, 6-1, 5-2.  Shortstop Ben McNeill cranked a leadoff homerun for the Bears in the bottom of the first but remained quiet for the rest of the game. McNeill accounted for two of the teams’ four hits. Alex Passarella continued to deal all game until he ran into trouble in the seventh and eighth inning, giving up four earned runs. He managed to strikeout 10 on the way to his first loss of the season.

The Bears lost game two of the double header, 5-2. NYIT outhit LIU Post 11-5 but left eight runners on base. Ben McNeill continued his hot day with two more hits. Teammates Ryan Kuskowski, Joseph Pesce and Nick Lombardi each had two hits on the afternoon as well. Starter Matt Bartnik strugged early, giving up five runs, two of them earned while only lasting 1.2 innings. The two losses puts NYIT at 3-8-1 on the season.

Adelphi: Adelphi defeated Franklin Pierce 5-2 in game one of the double header. A 2-for-3 day, including a homerun for right fielder Lucas Termilliger helped the Panthers jump out to a 1-0 lead in the third. Franklin Pierce answered in the fourth, scoring two of their own. A four-run seventh inning fueled by a bases-clearing triple from Tyler Becker helped put Adelphi up 5-2 and firmly in the driver’s seat.

In game two Franklin Pierce defeated Adelphi 8-3. It was a rough day for starter Michael Tarpey, who went 4.1 innings, giving up five runs and nine hits. The Panthers bats remained quiet for the day, with the only bright spot coming from Brett Malm, who went 2-for-4 with one home run and three RBI. The double header split puts Adelphi at 8-7-1 on the season.

Molloy: Molloy defeated Bridgeport 15-3 in its first game of the double header. The Lions exploded for 15 hits, including two innings scoring 5+ runs. Jake Saltzman was red-hot at the leadoff spot, knocking two hits, plating one and swiping two bags on the afternoon. DH Sean Hogan poured four RBI of his own in the Lions beatdown. Molloy could have cashed in even more, as they left 11 runners on base.

They defeated Bridgeport 7-2 in its second game of the double header. Third baseman Jack McCarty went 3-for-4, scoring four runs and plating one as well. Behind him, left fielder Jake Saltzman added two hits as well and drove in three of the teams seven runs. The team notched 11 hits behind starter C.J Schildt, who earns his first victory of the season with a complete game, seven inning, two-run performance.

LIU Post: LIU Post swept their double header today against NYIT, 6-1, 5-2. Starter James Varela goes the distance, giving up four hits, one run and striking out nine in the complete game. After not scoring in the first six innings, the bats finally woke up for the Pioneers in the seventh. They went on to score two in the seventh, three in the eighth and one in the ninth to secure the victory. Centerfielder Rob Andreoli continued his impressive season, knocking three more hits and driving in two.

In game two the Pioneers defeated NYIT 5-2. The hot pitching continued as Noah Lorenzo had a complete game seven inning performance, striking out 11 while only giving up two earned runs. He got help early off the bat of Anthony Vaglica, who cashed in a three run double to give the Pioneers an early lead in the first. He accounted for three of the teams’ five hits. The sweep moves LIU Post to 11-8 on the season.

Pace: Led by pitching that surrendered just two runs over 18 innings of work, the Pace University baseball team began Northeast-10 Conference play with a pair of wins over Southern New Hampshire University on Saturday afternoon. With the 1-0 and 4-2 victories, the Setters improve to 7-4-1 on the season and remain a perfect 6-0 at home. Dan Wirchansky and Ryan Aquino both dominated on the mound and earned the victories.

Max Effort Training

Division-III:

Maritime: Maritime defeated Puchase 4-1 in the first game of the double header. After six scoreless innings, the Privateers knocked in three runs in the bottom of the frame, two of them off the bat of Shane Sullivan. They rode the shoulders of starter Travis Bruinsma, who went 7.2 innings, allowing just one run and striking out 11 in line for his second win of the season.

They defeated Purchase 8-1 in the first game of the double header. The Privateers banged out 16 hits, with at least everyone but the pitchers spot getting at least one. Third baseman Antonio Diaz went 4-for-4 on the afternoon, stealing two bases, scoring two runs and knocking one double. Leadoff hitter Matt Costleigh also went 3-for-4 on the day with one run scored and one double. Dolan Brady went six strong innings, giving up just one run in line for his second victory of the season.

Farmingdale: Farmingdale defeated Mount St. Vincent 11-0 in game one of the double header. The Rams pounded out 15 hits, four of them coming from first baseman Ernie Geraci. Starter Joe Marino cruised to his second win of the season, going five solid innings of three hit ball.

Old Westbury: Old Westbury’s game against Mount Saint Mary has been postponed.

Juco: 

Suffolk: Suffolk’s double header against Monroe College has been postponed.

Nassau: Nassau’s double header against Bronx Community College has been postponed.
