March 16 Recap

There were only six local teams in action on Friday, March 16.

Division-I:

St. John’s: The Red Storm offense burst out to defeat UConn, 14-4. Sophomore Sean Mooney picked up his fourth win of the season, throwing seven innings striking out seven batters and giving up three runs. St. John’s hitters got to UConn starter Tim Caine, a two-time USA National Collegiate Baseball Team selection, who allowed six earned runs over five innings. Five Red Storm hitters recorded multiple hits, including junior Matt Woods and senior Jamie Galazin recording three each. Woods also tallied four RBI. Galazin scored five runs, becoming the first Johnnie to do so since 2013. St. John’s improves to 9-4 on the season and continue their series against UConn Saturday at 1 p.m at Jack Kaiser Stadium.

Division-II:

N.Y.I.T: The Bears fell to American International 11-4 in Lantana, FLA. NYIT falls to 1-4-1 on the year. The Bears continue their Florida trip Saturday to face Southern Connecticut State at 2 p.m.

Adelphi: The Adelphi Panthers fell to conference-foe Southern Connecticut State University, 10-8, in the final game of their Florida trip. Junior Ed Baram picked up his first loss of the season after giving up three runs in five innings. Sophomore Tyler Becker went 3-for-5, while senior Stephen Withers and junior Brett Malm each went 2-for-5 in the loss. Adelphi went 4-5 in their nine-game Florida trip and are 6-6-1 on the season. Their next game is Monday when they visit LIU Post at 3:30 p.m.

Pace: The Pace Setters fell to Northwood University 12-6 in their final game of their Kissimmee, Florida trip. Senior pitcher Ryan Aquino got the loss giving up five earned runs in two-plus innings. Fellow classmate Michael Gulino went 2-for-3 with a walk and a RBI and junior Michael Barbato finished 2-for-5 with an RBI and run scored. Pace holds a 5-4-1 record in 2018. The Setters next game is Wednesday, March 21 at 3 p.m. against Caldwell university.

Division III:

Farmingdale State: Down in Auburndale, FL, Farmingdale State split a double header against Springfield winning game one, 2-0, and losing game two, 8-0, in seven innings each. The Rams recorded only four hits in game one, but senior David Otero Jr. pitched 4 1/3 innings of shutout ball to earn his first win of the season. Juniors Anthony Gigante and Shawn Blasburg each picked up an RBI and a hit. Game two was the opposite for Farmingdale State. Sophomore Ernie Geraci recored the only hit for the Rams in route to a shutout loss. Junior Tommy DiGiorgi went 1/3 of an inning giving up two runs and three walks for the loss and sophomore Joe Marino pitched one inning giving up five runs on four hits. The Rams stand at 3-1 on the season. Farmingdale State continues in Auburndale to take on Wheaton (Mass.) for a double header starting at 1 p.m.

Maritime: The Privateers handled Yeshiva in both games, 13-0 in game one and 13-3 in game two, of a double header in Maritime’s first conference contest. Five Privateer hitters had multiple hits in game one. Freshman Travis Zurita went 4-for-4 with four RBI and sophomore Antonio Diaz went 3-for-3 with a RBI and two runs scored. Senior Aaron Schiavoni and Chris Deddo, and junior Joe Scerra each had two hits and two runs. The bats stayed hot in game two. Zurita recorded two more hits along with sophomore catcher Jake Vera going 2-for-3 with three RBI and a walk. Junior Kevin Dunn got his first collegiate win with three innings and six strikeouts in relief. The Privateers continued with the hot bats in game two. Maritime improves to 7-4 (2-0 Skyline). The Privateers next host Mt. St. Vincent on Sunday at noon.
