Division I:
Hofstra: For the second time in three weeks, the Hofstra Pride pitched a no-hitter as they defeated Mount St. Mary’s 11-0 in game one of a double header. This time, it was a combined no-hitter. Junior John Rooney threw six scoreless innings and recorded eight strikeouts, while junior Seamus Brazill took over for the last three innings. Brazill threw the first no-hitter in program history back on February 24 against Lamar. In addition to the no-hitter, redshirt-senior Teddy Cillis, sophomore Rob Weissheier, and junior Daniel Page all went yard for their first home runs of the year. Junior Mikey Riesner batted 3-5 with two RBIs and freshman Austin Gauthier went 3-4 with a walk and two runs scored.
Hofstra defeated UMBC in game two 9-6 in their double header, extending their winning streak to seven games. Redshirt senior Matt Weissheier picked up the win while junior Chris Weiss grabbed his second save, throwing the eighth and ninth innings. Austin Gauthier rocked a three-run shot for his first collegiate home run in the top of the second inning. Junior Vito Friscia knocked in his first home run of the year as well, finishing the day at 2-5 with two RBIs. Mikey Riesner went 3-4 with two doubles and two RBIs and senior Steven Foster went 3-5 with a triple and an RBI. Daniel Page also added two hits – including a triple. The Pride finish their Maryland road trip Sunday when they face UMBC at noon.
Stony Brook: The Seawolves fell to the Wagner Seahawks 14-6 in game one of a double header. Sophomore Brian Herrman took the loss giving up nine runs (seven earned) over four innings. Sophomore Chris Hamilton went 2-4 with a solo home run, two RBIs and two runs scored. Sophomore Nick Grande and junior Sean Buckhout each had two hits and an RBI in the contest.
Game two was suspended in the top of the seventh. The action will resume Sunday at noon followed by the regularly scheduled game.
St. John’s: The Red Storm fell to the Kansas Jayhawks 6-1. Senior Robert Boselli III drove in the only run for St. John’s on a ground-rule double in the top of the fifth inning. Senior Kevin McGee earned the loss, tossing 4 2/3 innings allowing three runs (two earned). The Red Storm finish their series against Kansas Sunday at 1 p.m.
Fordham: The Fordham Rams defeated the Coppin State Eagles 10-8 in game one of a double header. Fordham tallied 13 hits in game one. Junior Brian Goulard and freshman C.J. Vasquez each got three hits with on and two RBIs, respectively. Junior Anthony DiMeglio earned his first win of the yea in relief.
The Rams completed the double header sweep defeating Coppin State 4-1 in seven innings in game two. Junior Reiss Knehr tossed seven complete innings giving up one run and struck out a season-high nine batters. Sophomores Matt Tarabek and Alvin Melendez each tallied two hits. The Rams improve to 8-4-1 on the season. Fordham’s next game is Wednesday, March 14 against Wagner at 3 p.m.
Division II:
Molloy: The Molloy Lions defeated the Felician College Golden Falcons 13-4 at the Barry Invitational in Miami Shores, FL. The Lions used a five-run first inning to set the tone for the win. Sophomore Jake Saltzman went 3-6 with a home run and three RBIs. Freshman Matt Overton went 2-5 with four RBIs. Senior Kevin Hiss improved to 3-0 after tossing seven innings giving up four runs and striking out two hitters. The Lions improved to 5-7 on the season and will take on Barry University Sunday at 1 p.m.
Adelphi: The Adelphi Panthers split two games in Miami Gardens. Game one saw the Panthers down Caldwell 4-1. Junior Thomas Columbo went 2-3 with a double, run and two RBIs. Brandon Morse tallied a triple in the contest. Junior Kieran McLaughlin earned his second win and freshman Max Steele got his first save.
Adelphi fell to the undefeated New Haven Chargers 11-1 in game two. Five of the Chargers runs came in the first inning. Adelphi only got five hits in the contest. Junior Brett Malm led all Panthers in hitting going 2-4 with a run scored. The Panthers stand at 4-2-1 on the year. Adelphi battles NE-10 opponent American International College Sunday at 11 a.m. at Lynn University.
NYIT: NYIT split their Sautrday double header at the USA Baseball Complex in North Carolina. The Bears defeated Dominican 4-2 in game one. Sophomore D.J. Masuck threw three scoreless innings in relief to earn the win. Freshman Joseph Kelly and sophomore Nick Vitale tallied two hits each.
The Bears lost to the Findlay Oilers 7-4 in game two. Tied 3-3 after the fourth, the Oilers took the lead for good going on a 4-1 run. Three NYIT hitters finished with two hits. The Bears sit at 1-3-1 early in the year.
LIU Post: LIU Post split their double header at the USA Baseball Complex as well. The Pioneers fell to University of Findlay 6-4 in game one. The Oilers erased a one-run deficit in the ninth by scoring three runs to earn the win. It’s Post’s fifth ninth-inning loss of the season, on ongoing theme they’ll need to resolve. Sophomore starter Noah Lorenzo earned a no-decision pitching six innings while striking out nine and giving up two runs.
Game two saw the Pioneers shutting out Franklin Pierce 2-0. Junior James Varela struck out a career-high 12 batters in a complete game, the most for a Pioneer pitcher since 2016. Varela improved to 3-0 giving up only four hits. Junior Michael Manzione and senior Ramger Igelsias each went 2-4 while senior Joe Spitaleri drove in the only two runs. The Pioneers play a double header Sunday, taking on Dominican College in game one and the College of Saint Rose in game two. First pitch is set for 11 a.m.
Division III:
Maritime: The Maritime Privateers lost both games of a double header to Scranton to close their Florida trip. Game one saw Scranton winning 5-2. Sophomore Antonio Diaz and freshman Travis Zurita recorded the only two RBIs. Sophomore starting pitcher Travis Bruinsma earned his first loss of the year.
In game two, the Privateers were shut out 5-0. Four of the runs given up were unearned because of four errors. Maritime was held hitless as the umpires eventually called the game in the fifth due to rain. The Privateers next game is Friday when they begin conference play to face Yeshiva at 9:30 a.m.
St. Joseph’s College: The St. Joseph’s College Golden Eagles split their double header with SUNY Oswego at the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational. Game one had the Golden Eagles winning 2-1. Senior Matthew Burnett, and juniors Tyler Costa and Paul Britt each had one hit – the only hits the Golden Eagles had in the contest. Senior Nick Clemente picked up the win allowing one run in six innings.
In the second matchup, St. Joseph’s fell 12-6 against Oswego. Golden Eagles’ sophomore Tyler Sanderson went 3-3 with a RBI and senior Dylan Piscitelli went 2-4 with a run scored. St. Joseph’s next game is Wednesday, March 14 when they host John Jay at 4 p.m.
