The trend of exciting baseball has continued for the local programs. Today included a double header sweep for three teams, an epic comeback by another team in the last inning and a walk-off in extras! Below you will find the recap for Saturday, March 3.
Division-I:
Fordham: Fordham swept James Madison for a double header Saturday. The Rams defeated the Dukes 5-3 in game one. Fordham sophomore Billy Godrick went 3-4 with a solo home run and two runs scored. Junior Brian Goulard also notched three hits. Senior Ben Greenberg picked up his second win of the year (2-0) throwing six shutout innings with two strikeouts while giving up only one hit and one walk.
The Rams handled the Dukes 14-6 in game two thanks in part to a nine-run fourth inning. Sophomore Matt Tarabek went 3-5 with a double and two RBI. Junior Justin Bardwell went 2-3 with four RBI and classmate Brian Goulard went 2-5 with three RBI. The Rams improve to 5-3-1. Fordham will face JMU Sunday at 1 p.m. to conclude the series.
Hofstra: The Hofstra Pride swept the double header against the Norfolk State Spartans 4-0 in game one and 5-1 in game 2. Game one saw Pride junior John Rooney throw eight shutout innings striking out a career-high 13 batters. Redshirt-junior Teddy Cillis went 2-4 with a RBI triple. Senior second baseman Mikey Riesner also picked up two hits and a RBI.
The Pride won game two by a score of 5-1. Redshirt-senior Matt Weissheier earned the win pitching 6 2/3 innings giving up one run with six strikeouts. Freshman shortstop Austin Gauthier went 3-4 with a RBI. Sophomore first baseman Rob Weissheier picked up two hits and a RBI as well. The Pride are 4-2 on the year are currently on a four-game winning streak.. Hofstra and Norfolk State finish the series Sunday with the first pitch at noon.
St. John’s: The first two games of the St. John’s/UC Davis series are postponed due to inclement weather in the Sacramento area. The two teams will play a double header Sunday starting at 2:30 p.m.
Stony Brook: Stony Brook fell to the #1 ranked Florida Gators for a second straight game 8-0. Stony Brook falls to 6-3 on the season. Junior Bret Clarke was tagged with the loss giving up two earned runs over five innings. Sophomore Chris Hamilton went 2-2 with a double and a walk. Stony Brook finishes the series with the defending College World Series champions Sunday at 1 p.m.
Division-II:
Adelphi: The Adelphi Panthers walked it off against the Franklin Pierce Ravens 4-3 in 10 innings. Adelphi junior first baseman Thomas Columbo drove in the winning run on a single to center field scoring classmate Jonathan Iadevaia. Panthers sophomore SS Tyler Becker went 3-4 with an RBI and junior OF Brandon Morse went 2-4. Franklin Pierce starter John Amendola got the no-decision throwing nine innings giving up three runs striking out two batters. Ravens sophomore SS James Boria and senior OF Adam Chase recorded two hits each and senior catcher Stephen Octave drove in two runs. The two teams will finish the series Sunday in a double header starting at noon.
Molloy: The Molloy Lions fell to the Merrimack Warriors 18-5. Graduate student C.J. Schildt got the loss in four innings striking out four batters. Freshman Matt Overton and junior David Lim picked up two RBI each while sophomore Sean Hogan notched two hits. Molloy falls to 3-5 on the season. They conclude the series against Merrimack tomorrow for a double header starting at noon.
Division-III:
Maritime: The Maritime Privateers swept a double header against Southern Vermont, winning game one 8-2. Senior Anthony D’Ancona (2-0) got the win pitching five innings giving up one run striking out five batters. Senior first baseman Phil Russo led all hitters going 3-4 with a RBI and two runs scored. As a team, Maritime stole six bases, with senior outfielder Connor Alwan leading with two.
The Privateers also took game two by a score of 10-0. Maritime scored four runs in the first and four runs in the second to put the game away early. Four Privateer players picked up two RBI each. Sophomore Travis Bruinsma got the win pitching four shutout innings with three strikeouts. The Privateers improve to 2-1 in 2018. Maritime travels to Fort Pierce, FL for three games starting Wednesday, March 7 when they face Penn State-Behrend at 3 p.m.
Old Westbury: The Old Westbury Panthers played a double header against Baruch College. The Panthers took game one 8-0 thanks to a five-run sixth inning. Adam Heidenfelder improved to 2-0 pitching six shutout innings striking out four batters. The Old Westbury 6-7-8 hitters in freshmen Peter Capel, Mike Manetta, and Dom Kriegel hit a combined 6-11 and two RBI.
Game two finished in a 10-10 tie due to darkness. Down 9-4 in the sixth, Old Westbury went on a 6-1 run to tie the game before Mother Nature took over. Four Panther hitters finished with two hits, including the 1-2-3 hitters, who also drove in a combined six runs. Old Westbury now sits at 2-0-1 on the season. The Panthers next play Wednesday March 7 when they visit Stevens Institute of Technology at 3 p.m.
