Calhoun hosted a HR Derby to raise money for Steve Kuzemchak, who is a senior at Calhoun HS battling cancer. All money raised was donated back to the family to help pay for bills and defray costs.
It was a tremendous gesture and a unifying moment as all four teams in participation were able to put their rivalries aside and recognize the moment was bigger than the game itself.
“Stevie has been part of our team for the last few years and the players have fully embraced him as such,” said Head Coach Art Canestro. “The large turnout from the community yesterday is a prime example how they support one of their own. It was fun event for a great cause. Coach DiMarco and his wife, Terriann, did an outstanding job of organizing this event. We are looking forward to the Colts baseball season with Stevie by our side. We raised over $5,000 to offset costs for the family during this challenging time,” he added.
From a baseball standpoint, it featured several talented individuals from MacArthur, Calhoun, Bellmore JFK and Mepham HS. Calhoun came out victorious, led by Jake Edwards‘ 19 points in the final round.
I was very impressed with Matt Nachamie, Justin DeMaria, Dylan Judd, Joey Ricciardi, Sean Tierney and Jake Edwards who all had great showings. There’s a ton of talented players in Nassau County and this was a great opportunity for them to enjoy the game they love without any of the expectations to perform in a college showcase setting, tournament or playoff game.
