In many ways, 2017 was a banner year for Kellenberg Memorial HS. They rode an historically dominant pitching staff and a core group of seniors to a consecutive CHSAA championship. One of the unsung contributors on that team was junior Terrence Murray.
He hit a respectable .280 and played a strong defense in outfield. He turned his play up a notch early on in the summer season. Murray was able to parlay that success into something much bigger. He was one of the first incoming seniors this summer to commit to a Div-I program when he verbally committed to Fordham University.
He spoke with Vinny Messana and here’s what he had to say…
First off, congratulations on the verbal commitment to Fordham. Can you talk a bit about that process and how it came to be?
The recruitment process started when Coach Matt Marsh and I made highlight videos to send to college coaches. I went to my first showcase of the summer a weekend after school ended. We spent a lot of the summer going to tournaments and showcases, most of them out of state. I was extremely lucky because of the exposure and the experience I had with my teammates and my Motus Academy coaches. Before the showcases, I would send emails to the college coaches expressing my interest with a link to my highlight videos. As for Fordham, I reached out to the Fordham coaches before the Perfect Game Tournament in Georgia. They saw me play there, and we proceeded to talk over email. After this, I went to a showcase that Fordham was hosting and they offered me a spot on the team that day. I ended up choosing Fordham because it satisfied what I was looking for academically and athletically. It was not an easy decision, but I kept comparing every college I was interested in to Fordham and I found myself always favoring Fordham. I consider myself so fortunate to have this opportunity and to be able to go to Fordham and be a part of the team.
Was there anyone that was instrumental during that process?
One of my summer coaches for the Motus Academy, Matt Marsh, was a huge help during this process. He reached out to many coaches for me during the recruitment process and worked hard to make sure that I was getting good looks from college coaches. Matt Marsh made sure that the schools I was interested in would be the best athletic and academic fits for me while also giving me great advice.
How enjoyable was 2017 being a part of Kellenberg? What was the atmosphere like in that last game? That pitching staff was incredible, tell me something about your relationship with those guys.
Being a part of the Kellenberg baseball team in 2017 is something that I’ll never forget. Aside from the fact that it was my first year on varsity, it was also one of the best baseball teams I’ve ever been a part of both on and off the field. The atmosphere in the last game was awesome. The fact that so many people showed up to watch us play was great and we were all so pumped to play in an environment like that. Despite the fact that the position players and the pitchers were doing different things, it was great to watch how hard the pitching staff worked. It was an amazing experience to be a part of a team with such a talented pitching staff, even though that meant I didn’t get much action in the outfield. The starting pitchers Chris Cappas, Andrew Williams and Jason Diaz were all great teammates and friends.
Tom Murphy
I’m so proud of you, Terrence.
Love,
