This was the sixth and final week of the New York Baseball Academy (NYBA) at Hofstra University. The NYBA has been a staple of the Long Island Baseball scene for the past 40 years. After switching venues from NYIT, the camp has continued to feature instruction from the brightest baseball minds on the island, providing their knowledge to some of the top amateur talent in the region.
2017 proved to be much of the same–which is why so many parents flock to send their young ballplayers to the NYBA. Just over the past two years since Axcess Baseball (formerly Baseball on the Island) provided coverage of the camp, instructors have included recognizable names like John Habyan, Reid Gorecki, Dave Lemanczyk, Mike Gaffney, Matt Giuliano, Lou Bernardi and Kevin Salmon; just to name a few.
In addition to learning a great deal, many of the players had awards bestowed upon them. More important than the skill-based awards were those who were honored for their ability to actively listen and incorporate that into the games. These individuals also gave their 100 percent effort all week and never failed to hustle. Below are the winners of the “Super Hustler” Award.
Also pictured is 11-year-old Luke Ciminello who was the recipient of the first Mr.Attitude Award, given to the Super Hustler who best exemplifies what it means to be a team player while also displaying great baseball skills.
