The big Longwood class of ’18 lefty used all his pitches to dominate his opponents by way of the strikeout. Holmstock would strike out 14 Titans in his six innings of work in Boys of Summer 17u American. He would earn the win after his team would give him a 4-0 lead in the second inning.
“My main goal is to keep every one of my pitches down in the zone,” said Holmstock. “And get productive outs.”
The dominant LHP frustrated the Titans all game, as he only allowed three hits and two walks giving way to only six base runners over six innings (dropped third strike error was the sixth base runner). He would, however, run into trouble in the sixth inning after walking the nine-hitter to start the inning.
This set the table for Tony Figliarulo to knock a fly ball double to center field. The next batter would drive one in on a single and just like that the Titans had runners on second and third with no outs only trailing 4-1. Holmstock dug deep and really showed some heart retiring the next three batters in order, striking out the last two.
“I’m mostly just looking to work on my pitching this summer,” Holmstock said. “That’s my main goal and bring my control to the school season to help my team make playoffs.”
The uncommitted pitcher just came off a junior season at Longwood that was an extremely tough one; the Lions won just three games. Things are looking up for Longwood who graduated a large group of seniors the season before.
The Lions will be in good hands with Holmstock on their staff. The southpaw demonstrated good command on his fastball that gave way to a strong 12-6 curve and slider combo that worked well against the Titans’ lineup.
The Legends started their scoring in the first inning with a two out rally. A leadoff walk gave way to a quick double play, but that didn’t deter Thomas DiSena (Newfield ’18) who would step up and knock a base hit. The next hitter followed with a base hit of his own and Tom Gabrielle (Southampton ’18) would drive in a run on a base hit as well.
The Legends would get things going again with two outs in the second inning after their leadoff hitter, Corey Tingo, worked a walk and stole a base. The Legends catcher, Jason Marcus, would bring him in with a single. This time, however, the Legends rally would be cut short after DiSena roped a line drive right to the Titan’s shortstop.
The second place Legends gained a game on Titans Giaco, who they tied earlier in the summer. This win brings them within two games of Titans Giaco who is tied in first place with HDMH Titans. The Legends are set to pickup play on Friday against Team Reyes and first pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. from Newfield HS.
