The LI Expos remain in first place of Town of Brookhaven’s summer varsity league after a strong outing from their pitcher, Alex Scheitzer. The tall right hander’s slow delivery gave way to a sneaky quick fastball with great movement, in a game that started late after Huntington forfeited the first game of the double header.
Scheitzer, a Sachem North 2017 graduate, was unfazed by the delay and went out and threw six and two thirds strong innings of one-run ball striking out seven Blue Devils.
“My teammates helped me stay into it [the game] they helped me stay focused,” said Scheitzer. “I just wanted to go out there, throw strikes, stay calm and do what I’ve done for years.”
The Expos would go on to win the second game by a decisive score of, 9-1, after the Blue Devils started with eight players and had a ninth come late. The lack of a player only accounted for one out, as the Expos were held scoreless through the first two innings before coming together for a big five-run third inning.
The Expos shortstop, Ryan Decoursey, was a big part of their offense contributing a couple key RBI in the five-run third. The impressive 3-hitter is an incoming junior at Centereach and he demonstrated strong fundamentals and baseball IQ both at the plate and in the field. He also was a part of Centereach’s varsity team as a sophomore.
“I was just trying to stay back on the ball, because the velocity was off where I was expecting it to be,” Decoursey said. “I just do my best to have a quality at bat every time.”
The young infielder would finish his day 2-for-3 with a double and three RBI. This win gives the Expos a commanding lead in first place over NSBA Blue Devils, which is growing more and more important when it comes to playoffs with every passing game.
“I just want to have fun in the summer,” Scheitzer said. “I just try to have fun and throw strikes, I’ve strung together some good outings in the past couple games and I’m hoping to keep that going for the rest of the summer.”
Scheitzer says that he will be attempting to walk on at Stony Brook in the fall. While he knows his chances are slim he is still just looking for a chance to demonstrate his pitching skills. The righty hides the ball well and explodes off the mound with solid cutter/two seam movement mixing in an occasional breaking ball, which is extremely off speed in comparison to his fastball.
The Expos are set to pick up play this coming Thursday against the second place NSBA Blue Devils, first pitch is scheduled for 8:30 p.m. Huntington is set to take on East Hampton on Monday and first pitch is also scheduled for 8:30 p.m.
