Will Feil, Wheatley Defeat Oyster Bay, 8-5, On Verge of Nassau Class B Title

Wheatley put up four runs in the first inning, and that was just the beginning of a wild, offensive shootout against the same Oyster Bay team that was looking for revenge of last year’s Nassau County Class B championship.

In the top of the fourth, third baseman Will Feil smoked a long RBI double to right center field to score Eric Beierlein to put Wheatley up 6-5. He scored when the ensuing batter, Mike Cunney, lined a single to center to make the score 7-5.

After their starter, Stephen McCleary, allowed the first two runners to reach base via singles, left fielder James McPhillips came on to put out the fire and he did just that. He induced a weak flyout to left and a 5-5-3 DP to Feil at third to end the threat.

He wound up firing the final three innings as well, recording the save to preserve the 8-5 lead.

Wheatley’s bats came out of the gate red-hot against Baymen RHP James Losee. The first five batters compiled hits, including RBI hits from Feil and Cunney. The 4-0 lead would not last as the Baymen bats struck right back with two runs in the home half of the first on an RBI double by League MVP Harrison Treble and an RBI hit by Joe Daniello.

After both teams went scoreless in the second, Wheatley put up one run in the third on a long solo shot by Matt Cristina to increase the lead to 5-2.

Oyster Bay answered with a three-spot on another RBI hit by Daniello and a two-run double by Kal Lipsman to tie the game at 5-5.

That’s when Feil opened the game up with his RBI hit which was ultimately the difference in the game.

Oyster Bay threatened in the bottom of the seventh, when two batters were hit by pitches and a single by Evan Mattel brought the go-ahead run to the plate, but McPhillips induced a line out to shortstop to end the game

With the victory, Wheatley improved to 13-7, while Oyster Bay dropped to 15-3. Game 2 will be tomorrow, if Wheatley wins they are crowned Class B champs for a consecutive season.
