Fresh off being named ECC Pitcher of the Year, Frankie Moscatiello (Rocky Point ’14) fired 7.1 innings of one-run ball, allowing St. Thomas Aquinas to top Molloy 6-1 in the first round of the ECC Championship.
“He pretty much kept the game in control,” said Head Coach Scott Muscat. “He struggled a little bit with the control but he only gave up a run–he did a fantastic job,” he added.
When Giovanni Dingcong steps to the plate, the fielder’s might as well vacate the infield and all stand along the warning track. The powerful outfielder launched one of his patented majestic home runs (15th of season) to give the Trojans an early 1-0 in the second inning, and it was one they would never relinquish.
Both teams went quietly over the next few innings, but STAC opened it up in the fifth inning with an RBI double by Cris Ruiz and RBI single by Bobby Morse (Commack ’13). They added two more in the sixth on a double play and an RBI single by Joseph Pena to make it 5-0.
The Lions got on the board in the sixth inning on a run-scoring single by Elijah Leerdam to score Michael Rahn.
Despite threatening to score in the ninth with three singles, they weren’t able to get any runs across and fell into the loser’s bracket of the tournament. They will take on Bridgeport tomorrow morning, hoping to keep their season alive.
Moscatiello lit up the radar gun with his fastball, touching 93 MPH in the first inning in front of many scouts. The Lions did a good job of putting the ball in play, striking out only four times against a pitcher that averages 10.19 K/9 on the season.
They will play LIU Post tomorrow at 2pm.
